Suite does some cool things (like I remembered, Bolt and Sword is easily the best part of it). World's End sounds pretty neat and does good stuff with its synths. I don't care too much for the sudden crackling noise that I hear twice in the song, but the rest is pretty good.

The Grand Finale [9]

The Grand Finale is just a classic non-KH banger from Shimomura. I love the dark tone and tension coming from it, just a solid final boss song that finishes the game on a high note. End of the Summer is also really pleasant to listen to, it's really just a Sonic Unleashed song that got scrapped and sent to another Sonic game it seems.

Honestly, a pretty good day to finish the bracket as well as the entire first round for this VGMC! Can't wait to see how the rest of the contest turns out.

I'm a little bit upset that Photoconductivity did not live up to the hype surrounding it. I was pretty close to voting for the other song. In fact either song that wins will be good enough for me because they're close enough together for me.

For as long as I've remembered, I've never particularly liked "The Grand Finale". It doesn't do much for me, but I'm definitely in the minority there though.

This track is huge. I don't think I'd rate any one segment as high as the experience of the whole, though Iron Fossil comes close-- I love the way it starts, building up that feeling of anticipation. Then it goes in big with the percussion and off we go; it's such a rewarding introduction.

I'd originally heard this piecemeal, but when I listened to it end-to-end for the first time I realized it really was the best way to experience it; I'd always felt something was missing when listening to Bolt & Sword back in VGMC14, but in the context of the whole it feels like a vital piece, one of three central action pieces each with different personalities but clearly tied together aesthetically. The transitional sections feel essential as well, a way to decompress for a moment, drifting to the next highlight. The way Guidance closes everything out with callbacks to a couple of notable motifs is wonderful. As a whole, it feels like one of the most striking, ambitious VGM tracks I've heard.

other notes:
-I supported World's End during nominations! this speaks to how highly I view this match. other than Albireo Lake, I find I gravitate most towards quieter Blue Reflection tracks. I like the way this seems to express an adolescent character's inner turmoil-- bursts of distracting static, voices of playing children, fast voices you can't make out, flat and demanding voices, tension and anxiety, a moment where you try to reassure yourself, but you find yourself adrift. very cool track, and one of my favourites from this ost

The first half of World's End is plenty deserving of a high rating - final dungeon theme with PMD strings is an easy combination to support! (rip Tree at Farthest End) I really need to lock down my score for this...first I had E.SYNAPSE above it, my current notes have E.SYNAPSE at 7.6 and World's End at 8.2, and today I'm liking E.SYNAPSE better again?

Anyhow, that finally rounds out my Top 16 and then some! Nearly half went out round 1, but I was really happy with how many of my favourite VGM made it out of noms! Generally I like orchestral and electronic instrumentation but influenced by pop and rock tropes (vocals, strong melodies, verse-chorus structure, minor keys with bits of major tonality, regularly-timed percussion and rhythm). The list also has some "genre entry points" that I don't feel represent my historical tastes, but are exciting frontiers for me to explore new genres! (Move Me, Don't speak her name, Reach for the Moon, Sanctuary-RI, Ra Melody) I really couldn't ask for more from this year's field!

Dariusburst Another Chronicle - Suite Photoconductivity 7 There's a lot here I like. The more electronic stuff around the 8-10 minute mark is good. Some of the parts in the third section, like around 19-21 min is also pretty cool. I suppose this goes through all of the bosses and areas, so there's undoubtably a lot of variety already, but I find peace in listening to it as all one song, hearing the ebbs and flows as it starts off serene, builds to something intense and hectic, then calms down to light vocalization near the end.

Blue Reflection: Second Light - World's End 5.5 The quintessential nostalgic tinged music box piano here is a joy to listen to, but I didn't appreciate the demonic glitch thrown in at times. It is a heck of a combination, but it wasn't meshing well at all for me.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story - The Grand Finale 8.5 This is it. It's everything you've been preparing for. All of it has come to a head as your journey has finally come to an end. Do you have what it takes to overcome this final evil? Will you rise to the occasion or shirk away? I really love the epic end like energy that this provides.

Sonic Runners - End of the Summer 7.5 This doesnt really sound like a summer theme but it is a celebration of everything sonic. Joyous and fun.

MATCH 2(?)

Suite Photoconductivity unfortunately sandwiches the part I do like in between less good parts. Third Tune is pretty cool and is really the main part of the song that I enjoy. It's much more appealing to me melodically than the other parts, which don't stand out much to me. Though as a whole, I will say that it has the benefit of not doing anything that I actively dislike, unlike some other Darius songs that have been in the contest before. Well, Fifth Tune starts to approach that territory, but it's not too bad.

World's End is sadly underwhelming for a Blue Reflection song. The piano is nice, but I feel like it doesn't really do anything all that interesting to me. Plus those static-y interruptions towards the beginning of the song are a bit annoying. Though I like the callback to the motif used in the first Blue Reflection songs at 2:32. Still, I like World's End more than Suite Photoconductivity as a whole. It would be a lot closer, though, if it was up against only Third Tune.

The Grand Finale is decent, but I've always felt like this song was kind of middle-of-the-road.

End of the Summer is so good! Another really great discovery this year from the contest. Honestly, I'd go as far as to say that this is now my favorite Sonic song. I love all the bright and happy emotions this song carries. Especially 1:25-1:59! Love that guitar melody and how the minor chord at 1:29/1:30 colors some of the emotion in that part. I really like that this is the last song in the bracket because it feels like a song to send off a fun adventure.

I hadn't heard that before but I can absolutely hear the similarity, thanks for linking! PMD's soundtracks continue to surprise me.
