I will agree on not liking Charly, but I disagree on everything else. I think theyre attempting to prove themselves as a real star trek and that is why they deleted the comedy.and I think it worked fantastically. Its the best star trek since TNG at this point

I agree that it's fantastic, but I also feel like they're over correcting a bit.
All the best star treks have a healthy dose of comedy mixed in. Even some full comedy episodes.
So far this season the comedy is almost entirely absent. They need to find a working balance between the comedy and the drama.

I understand that outlook, and I respect it. It makes sense. But I totally disagree in my own opinion. Taking a serious route has made the show way more entertaining for me. I think that's why they semi-rebranded it too, with New Horizons. The episodes this season have been everything I've wanted to see out of a Star Trek for 20 years, but haven't seen by the brand itself.

I actually feel as though the humor is where the early episodes fell short. Most of the jokes didn't seem to work for me, and just felt like they went on too long since Fox wanted a strictly comedy show, whereas Seth didn't.

It makes the few brief humor we do get in the current season feel more natural and less forced, and funnier as a result

I can agree with this

I've been rewatching all the earlier episodes alongside the new ones and while I think the shift to serious is a major net plus, you're right in that they pretty much TOTALLY deleted the comedy. And I wouldn't mind a few jokes here and there

There are overarching plotlines throughout the series.
Starting anywhere but episode 1 wouldn't feel natural and you'd be missing a lot of information.

Its very much like star trek where half the episodes are self-contained and the other half are riding on previous episode storylines

I'd recommend just starting from the beginning, but also understand that the first few episodes were SUPER comedy, and then it got more serious pretty quick, but still a solid chunk of comedy until season 3

It's best to start from the beginning. It feels a little uneven early on, but it's still good for establishing the characters

I'm really loving this season, the latest episode was really great. I'm borderline crushing on Dr. Claire.

One of my favorite overall recent shows.

Of the Star Trek shows I like Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks and Prodigy. Less said about the other two the better. Of those three SNW is the best. I also prefer prodigy slightly over lower decks but I am aware that is not a popular opinion.

I just got into Prodigy, it's cool so far. I'm also caught up on Strange New Worlds and it's definitely the best Trek in recent memory, they did good with both.

Even in the S1 "Fox hates scifi" era, MacFarlane was right on about it.

i was reminded of one other i don't like about this season though. sometimes the score is really loud and annoyingly overly present.
Holy shit, that's what's bugging me. Thanks for explaining what I couldn't quite figure out.

TOS could be heavy handed at times but Roddenberry was far more subtle than Seth could ever be. Seth can be a very funny writer but he can't convey a message without shoving it down a viewer's throat.

Even with the optimism of classic Trek there were still a few hints that the world was as good as it could be but not perfect. Starfleet still had political squabbles like the episode where Kirk had to deal with get getting rank pulled on him to get the computer to run the ship for example.

They do not. Seth decided not to include transport technology because having to use shuttles allows for much more interesting story and negates the ability to simply beam out of any bad situation.

Its not always status quo, though Ill admit it usually is. But so is Star Trek. One of the more recent eps called into question how humans view abortion vs how an alien species views it, and was pretty harsh on the pro-choice human outlook.

Yeah I dont understand why people think this. Yeah, Orville def gets preachy, but comparing it to Star Trek as if that show didnt get preachy is bonkers. I will agree with the poster that said its more in-your-face with Orville, I do think thats true. But not necessarily in a bad way and not any more frequent than OG Star Trek or TNG.

I think it helps Orville stand out in its own right, by occasionally really zooming in on our current human issues but placing them far in the future on a spaceship. Its very Seth McFarlane, hes a natural social commentator in every show hes created

Not always though, theres def progression. Characters have come and gone. Yeah with Issac its getting a bit much, I agree.

There needs to be some status quo in a show like this though. Star Trek TNG was largely the same way. Occasional small changes but overall things revert to normal and a new journey happens next week. Its not meant to be a serial show.

I'm really enjoying this season. I actually have an active topic about it on the Cable and Satellite Board.

I've found some very humorous moments this season, like Isaac showing up at the tavern in his cowboy hat and butchering that famous saying, or Lamaar's attempted relationship with Talla. And pretty much anything with Bortus and the female-dominated race they were negotiating with (I literally spit out my drink when the crew all turned their heads slowly and in unison to look at Bortus when clearing the ship of male leadership).

They need to stop fucking with Isaac, and let him get a win that's permanent.
The only thing this season has done that means anything has been Topa, who has been absent since.

Even Mercer having a kid has gone nowhere.

Yeah. A few episodes were quite serious but a few had a more comedic bent and even the serious ones fit a handful of jokes in.

I mean the Topa thing was a running plot for THREE seasons now. The show isn't shy to have long term plot threads. There have been a lot of multi episode, season long or series long plot threads.

Continuity and ongoing plots are something Orville does better then old trek did except DSN.
