According to ERCOT charts, and their explanation of what happened last year, the problem in "extreme" cold weather was the equipment freezing up, which reduced the state's total energy capacity to a point of being drastically below what the state demands. The problem last week was simply the fact that the energy capacity was barely enough to serve the states energy demands when we have multiple consecutive days of ~100 - 105+ degree weather. Last year, ERCOT said they had to shut down the power grid in order to keep it from collapsing, which would have caused a months-long outage. Not sure of the details of why the power grid not having enough power to serve the state would cause this, but I'm definitely not knowledgeable in this field.
