Here's my take on it: the military brass is, for the most part, made up of people who have worked their whole lives to achieve their status, and value order, discipline, and respect. The Republican party is currently dominated by Trump, and all the little junkyard dogs desperate to imitate him; unqualified idiots who have done nothing to earn their position, are currently doing nothing but sowing disorder in this country, don't have an ounce of discipline, and will only respect the military as long as their whims are obeyed without question.

The brass likely skew conservative in their personal leanings, but it's unlikely that they'd throw away everything they've built over the course of their careers on the whims of an egomaniacal jackass. They didn't back Trump in his first coup attempt, even though he was their acting commander in chief; therefore it stands to reason that they won't back Trump nor his braindead cronies the next time they attempt one.

I'd say there's definitely more that are somewhat conservative leaning but most aren't super strongly on either side. At least that was my experience. I haven't met any soldier that was openly against abortion though I'm sure they exist. But it was far from a widespread belief.

Too many Americans are still buying into Red Scare propaganda so they think anything even slightly left of the system we have now is a restriction of "freedom" even though Americans don't actually understand what it means to be free.

Because being one medical emergency from bankruptcy certainly isn't free.
