Like this'll ever happen. As long as ISPs have power, they'll want to lower the US broadband standard, not extend it.

ISP: "we gonna need to charge you more even though your service is exactly the same because poor us have to do SOOO MUCH WORK! to be in line with new FCC standards!!!!"

FCC basically works for the ISPs

probably were told to help them make an excuse to enjoy all this inflationary profiteering

Comcast has already started rolling out cellphone style data caps on home internet nationwide. This will just incentivize their competition to do the same.

They're basically increasing the standard of internet connectivity for ISPs in the US to legally call their service "broadband."

Bandwidth demands are naturally going up over time as the things we send and receive over the internet get bigger.
  • Video streaming gets higher and higher resolution over time
  • Pictures are getting more and more detail
  • File sizes are getting larger
  • More and more services are moving to the cloud, creating an even bigger need for more bandwidth.

$$$

fyi the big isps have been getting rid of their smaller plans like 50mbps

and that is all you need for streaming

at&t literally begged me to install fiber for 300mbps at no cost they said and same price and free gift card

I only did it because after awhile I got to an hosest rep who explained they gonna get rid of the 50mbps and also for the time being it is actually cheaper (they will jack it up)

Sucks for me that at&t in my area has the highest plan at 50... Would love 300mbps. My only other option is comcast, and I hate comcast just a bit more than at&t. And neighbors with comcast say it really isnt worth it.

Having the option is nice, but is not so nice if they force you and double the price. Granted that hasn't happened yet but I fully expect it. What they are doing first is trying to have it ubiquitous in the area.

Yea, I find it funny when you see ISPs advertising what you can do with each speed....like needing 100 for 2 tvs running netflix and gaming at the same time. Hell I remember once playing FFXIV and somebody watching netflix while we only had 4GB internet.

For the record, Ive noticed no functional difference between 50 and 200. I had 50 and moved to a place with 200. There really wasnt a real difference as far as gaming, 1080p streaming, or even downloads really since most of the time youre limited by the download server and never get your full speed anyway.

I usually download Steam games between 50-70 MB/s. Certainly beats waiting an hour or two for a huge game. Also, helps if you have a huge househould with a lot of bandwidth users.

Dont particularly want 300 for gaming. Its for when other people in the house watch netflix, or I am trying to download something while playing or watching a stream. With 50 mbps, downloading a steam update and watching a stream, the stream lags quite a bit. Not to mention if someone else is watching something on netflix or whatever.

Wait at least a decade before that standard is established, very few places have 50 mbps much less 100.

It would push ISPs to upgrade their infrastructure to support higher bandwidth for customers at large so that they can continue to sell their service to customers as "broaband."

There should be a standard because right now (mainly in rural areas) its hard if not downright currently impossible to get decent internet

And as you can imagine the isps that do provide any kind of service in these areas charge like $100+ monthly for internet that you cant even game onits almost criminal.

I had 2 kids trying to do virtual school on 25 down. They had so many problems. Sometimes the teacher wanted them on 2 tabs and they just couldnt do it. I upgraded to 100 and all the problems with virtual learning went away.
