I personally don't care that people know what State I'm in, but in general it's good internetting to give out as little information about your private life as possible in public spaces. Social engineering is a thing. Some post you made two years ago about seeing a movie is probably harmless, but weirdos out there can collect enough disparate information about you to do damage, if they want.

One of the most common social engineering tactics is figuring out the passwords to your various online accounts (email, social media, banking). Security has become increasingly idiot-proof to combat this, but nothing is ever truly idiot proof.

Another thing is if you let people know you'll be out of town on social media, and the same audience who sees that post knows where you live, they now know the perfect time to break into your house and steal all your shit.

And also just generally doxxing is a thing that exists. If people get your address or phone number they can fuck you up in all sorts of ways.

Hell, some guy on this very site had someone track down his girlfriend and tell her he planned to propose to her. Ended up ruining the whole relationship.

Because a sizable portion of the human population are morons who derive enjoyment from causing others misery.

I've been here too long and I've seen way too much doxxing happen. Plus people hold onto minor details like that and will bring it up. Any practiced CEman already knows it's wise to just keep your mouth shut when it comes to PII.

I live in San Francisco, California. As I am 1 of only ~900K living here, I am easy to find. If it helps, I wear a lot of black and band t-shirts.

I already share too much, and there's 2 that used to go here that knew my exact address.

Still not as bad as the information someone I knew would share/post freely to users on this site. I'm talking full name, street address, including a video tour of their house. There's no telling how many users this information reached. It was legit, and part of why I was so damn concerned for her, especially given her age at the time.

My friend lives in Fair Lawn, that's not too far from me. I don't care enough to do anything about it, it's more of a "oh cool this person lives close to me."

I got doxxed before on a past account and there was a user who posted that dox here on CE. It was old information though, there were things in that dox that were outdated so luckily nothing happened to me.
