oops! all indies

hello

These are all games that I have some level of interest in but I don't really know much about, I'm hoping the board can enlighten me on which (if any) are worth a go. Other suggestions are welcome too of course, I've recently gone through Undertale and Kentucky Route Zero so I feel like a bit of a break from dialogue heavy games for a bit (otherwise I'd likely play As Dusk Falls). I also want to get around to stuff like GotG and Crusader Kings but I imagine they'd be a large time investment, so I'm sticking with indies for now.

Thanks, B8!

Eiyuden Rising is longer than Guardians if that matters

Doesn't really matter unless it's super long (just checked howlongtobeat and it's under 20 hours so that's no bother), the main thing putting me off Eiyuden is the mediocre reviews.

Up. Suppose I shouldn't be surprised the SNES-style RPG is dominating! I haven't heard anyone talk about it though.

You can ultimately ignore all votes for Rising, Kraken, and Artful (possibly Weird too) since they aren't what you are looking for.

While it isn't my favorite of what's remaining, Skul is a good game and is gameplay-centric.

Rising has a lot of cutscenes/dialogue and I found it to be boring as hell. In my 3-5 hours playtime I went through the same forrest dungeon about 5-10 times for fetch quests. That included fighting the same tree boss of the dungeon 5-10 times.

Skul was a fun game that held my attention for a while if you like the Dead Cells style roguelike forumla. Would also recommend Everybody Saves the World if you're looking for a quick indie.

Ha, I figured this wasn't exactly a list of widely known games but B8 usually knows more about obscure stuff than I do.

I mean I don't mind regular amounts of dialogue and story here, I of course love that stuff, I'd just like to mix things up somewhat from the very narrative heavy games I've been on lately. I'd still like to hear what people think about all of these though so I know which ones are worth getting around to eventually and which I shouldn't bother with!

Note I was also considering putting art of rally on here largely because of your entry into VGMC (and its aesthetic), but I watched a review and apparently the gameplay isn't as accessible as it would seem to someone who isn't an expert at driving games lol.

I do like Dead Cells! And do you mean Nobody Saves the World? Because I played that a few months ago and it is indeed fun, that would fit the bill perfectly for what I'm looking for if I didn't already play it >_>

Rising is winning easily but nobody's actually said anything positive about it yet, is it just the most widely played of these?

I really enjoyed Eiyuden, main gripe I've seen is the large number of sidequests but that didn't ever bother me.

You have to understand that this is B8 where they have a bias toward Japanese games and RPGs. Eiyuden Chronicle Rising is the only one that fits the bill. The game's quality is ultimately irrelevant, it was always going to get the most votes.

Yeah, racing is my favorite genre, but I'm self-aware enough to be able to determine the barrier to entry of games in the genre. There are a ton of customization options for driving mechanics, but it will likely be daunting with a lot of trial and error with tinkering until you get something that suits you. It took me several tweaks to get something that worked very well for me even.

There's also two ways to play. You can do the actual racing stuff across seasons/time periods, or you can do an open-world collectible hunt across half a dozen or so locales.

It's not an amazing game by any standards, but it is a quality title. Given your admittance of your skill at racing games, this would probably be a frustrating experience for you from the start.

Oops yeah that's what I meant. In that case I'd suggest Children of Morta or Skul.

I think Children of Morta literally just left Game Pass last week.

I know you said you want a break from dialogue heavy games, but I tried Road 96 last night and it seems pretty neat.

I made sure this list was all indies partially to avoid a blowout from an AAA title that everyone has played, but I neglected to consider that I had a lone JRPG >_> Still I'll look into Eiyuden properly, I do like a good JRPG and it's not supposed to be super long.

Yeah I saw Morta had left GP, it was on my shortlist too. Road 96 is on my radar (again because of VGMC) but I forgot/didn't know it was free, so that's one to add to my list!

New day bump. Looks like I'm getting Eiyuden, but I'd like to hear what people think about any of these (or others not on the list) so I know what's worth bothering with in future!

It's very mediocre lol.

I love JRPGs too but I couldn't find anything enjoyable after like 4-5 hours.

Update: Eiyuden isn't doing anything original and it's repetitive but I'm having fun after the very slow first few hours. The art is nice and I don't mind the resource scavenging, it's a neat game to turn my brain off to.

OK I've 100%'d Eiyuden, it's 'fine'. The gameplay is simple but enjoyable enough after the slow start. Can't say this makes me want to play the main Eiyuden game though!
