Professor Layton and the Last Specter: 6.5/10

Except for the last chapter in F, the characters and story are both garbage. The real highlight of the game is the gameplay, and is the best the Tales series has done with combat.

The story is almost non-existent. The game excels at its battle system and cast chemistry / dialogue, but virtually nothing happens and the character development is underwhelming even if they are thoroughly amusing for the duration of the game. The cast is greater than the sum of its parts. The story hardly has anything. The 5 is for the amount of laughs you get with three or four trolls in the party all at once.

Loses points for the ham-fisted and repetitive theme of "Courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality" and the forgettable cast/plot (and for Pascal being horrendously annoying).

I do remember liking the Asbel/Hubert relationship, which saves Graces from a low-low score.

You know it's funny to me how everyone complained a out the childhood secrion when this came out, but on replay the child section is actually some of the best story content in the game.

The first chunk after the time jump honestly has tons of potential as well, I was kind of shocked how much I was digging it last year because I had such mild feelings about the game in my memories. When there's party conflict the game is strong.

The game COMPLETELY falls apart and becomes a boring pile of nothing almost exactly once the party is fully formed, though. After that, it's just predictable generic mediocrity all the way until the end. Sure, it's not anywhere near as bad as the last chunk fo Xillia or the last 30ish% of Zesteria, but honestly I think the dull mediocrity might be less engaging than the absolute train wreck stuff in those games.

There are people who didn't like the childhood section? That was my favorite part. Asbel is so lame after that.

The game starts great, and the rest of the cast is alright (particularly Sophie). The humor can be awesome too, particularly Richard, who is use for some magnificent jokes. The serious parts, however, are very bad, and Asbel brings the game down a lot.

Childhood section is bad but holy hell they managed to outdo that by making the post time skip part the dullest of the dullest Tales story imaginable.

Luckily the game has the most intriguing combat in the series. The story... Yeesh.

We're talking about the story here, not the combat. The story in the prologue is great. The combat not so much, because they're kids and it feels (intentionally) clunky. Once they grow up, however, this reverses: The combat becomes fantastic and the story falls apart. There's a reason I only played it once, but I should go back to it. I will ask in my Tales playthrough topic after I finish Zestiria, whatever "finish" means.

I also feel the need to mention the line about parenting from Mr. Lhant of "I managed to avoid making my father's mistakes - but in the process made entirely different ones!" I just felt the need to mention it since it's so realistic.
