It goes hand in hand with rap culture. Rappers get gun downed all the time. Young Dolph, XXX, Nipsey Hussle, King Von, the list goes on. Those were big rappers with followings and they all got gunned down. Young Thug and Gunna are in jail right now for alleged gang activity. The street shit has become ingrained in the culture. Its sad.

A lot of these dudes grew up in that life, its not so much as an active decision as it is just doing things how they have always done them

Nip was a crip from Crenshaw way before he dropped a record but at the same time he had a good heart. He stayed in his hood and opened up his TMC store there and tried to employ former inmates to help get their lives together.

He was always trying to give back to his community after he became successful. Thats partly why he was easily hithe was literally outside of his own shop when the shooter came outta nowhere and fired into him.

Point is sometimes even if you make it out the streets the streets will follow/find you. Its a sad and unfortunate truth.

Its how things are now. Have a song with a catchy hook in it, throw it online, bam youre a star. You can continue with the gang life and whatever else, you dont have to have a perfect image for the world to see so they buy your albums. Its a totally different time now.

but the point was that they were just living their lives, and made the mistake of continuing to live in/visit the city they were from after finding success.

not all beefs warrant death (even people not part of gangs can have personal beefs), but beef + success of an enemy sometimes adds fire to the flame.

I mean I kinda figured out what opp meant listening to Chief Keef back in the day because of context of his songs and already knowing a lot of rap slang, but in the context of this post I wouldn't automatically figure it out.

What is sorta surprising (given that a lot of people here seem to be in their 30s) that people didn't know what Neon Octopus was talking about with the Naughty By Nature song, because that song was hella popular when it came out and I remember my older sister explaining what it meant to me after nagging her multiple times.

I never heard it before, but I am an old white guy that hasnt listened to rap since the early 90s. However I did correctly guess the meaning from context.

Another rapper was literally just gunned down maybe weeks or months ago for doing the same thing. I think he even had his IG going live when it happened. Advertised his location and said come get him. And they came.
