They made a Predator prequel and it's not even coming out in theaters?

Wow. You know that has to be bad. <_<

Predator 1 was a class on its own in comparison to its sequels. The fact that there is so much good word of mouth for Prey speaks volume.

Yeah it's gotta be as good as Predator 2 at least. Predators was pretty lame. And it would be literally impossible for the movie to be as bad The Predator was.

someone posted something about how if it showed in theaters, then when it came time to stream, it would do so on HBO Max, or something like that.

so they decided to just have it go straight to Hulu to avoid all that.

The movie was produced by 20th Century Studios, a Disney subsidiary, so I would very much doubt it would be on HBO Max unless HBO Max was paying Disney for it.

The reason Prey is on Hulu is the same reason any movie premiers on a streaming service: An attempt to increase and maintain its subscriber-base with exclusive content. Disney wants people to subscribe to Hulu. This is probably further influenced by the fact that the "middle market" for movie theaters has yet to return. So an R-rated prequel to a cult-franchise wasn't going to be doing big bucks anyway.

apparently, there's a deal where if a Warner Media or 20th Century Fox movie is given a theatrical release, it'll initially air on HBO Max when given a home release.

can't find it for Prey, but I saw an article about it for Bob's Burgers Movie:

This is in line with the streaming release strategy for films that first get an exclusive theatrical release under the Disney banner, as The Bobs Burgers Movie was produced and distributed by Disney-owned 20th Century Studios. Hulu is owned by Disney, of course, but the HBO Max streaming debut is due to an existing deal between WarnerMedia and 20th Century Fox that will continue through 2022.

Nah it's very much a thing. Fox movies end up on HBO Max for whatever reason. Some legacy deal from before the acquisition.

The movie is airing on Hulu to avoid that and to also cut marketing costs. Disney has been pretty much screwing all Fox productions over since the acquisition.

Just to back this up, I think every movie on this list that had a theatrical release ended up streaming on HBO Max and not a Disney owned streaming service:

Goodness, the endless series of entanglements all these acquisitions have created are a mess.

Regardless, if Disney thought Prey would have a highly profitable theatrical profit potential they would gladly release it in theaters, despite HBO getting to stream it later.

At least Disney didnt decide to just straight up cancel things like it appears Discovery is doing.

They also did release some of the movies (Rons Gone wrong, Death on the Nile, Bobs Burgers, etc) so Im betting the prior experience of releasing in theaters and then having the movies show up on Disney/Hulu and HBO max just wasnt worth it for them.

I saw them both in theaters and the 2nd one was so dark you literally couldn't tell what was happening in the movie lol.

I believe they had to edit it for home release and streaming later

The only good thing about the 2nd movie was that it was a truly rated R movie, so it had a lot of shock value from the aliens killing kids and unborn babies. Otherwise, yeah it is the very definition of shitty western practice of not being able to see shit with its poorly lit set pieces, quick camera cuts, and had an ending that literally ripped off from a Resident Evil movie. A rated PG13 Predator and Alien movie was somehow better.
