The cartoon had 130 episodes and they got by without that twist. They had a live action theatrically released movie without it being canon. The original toyline came to an end before they could reveal who he was. Seeing that he actually had a previous identity before his self-inflicted disfigurement added to the complexity of why he continued on as a vengeful antagonist instead of submitting to Randor. One of the comic origins where he was basically an alien from another dimension where he had a family and skullheaded people were the default sounded way more ridiculous and cheap. He was basically written as a dopey conman....with a devious looking skull for a face (and the victims were just written to fall for it). They wrote him as more of a bumbling crook instead of a sinister and menacing warlord. They neutered him for the sake of politically correct marketing. Like the original cartoon series was historically a glorified toy advertisement that through dumb luck just happened to also be entertaining for kids too. But the 90's reboot failed to repeat that; it screamed "this reboot obviously sucks, but gets a season to push merchandising ".
