This is a good way to make people spitefully play the game you're recommendeding.

Just leave Earthbound out of it

Earthbound is ok, but nowhwere near the hype it gets.
The jokes are ok. Same level as Spaceballs.
The RPG kinda sucks. Encounter rate is generally too high and fights are repetitive.
The characters are great, but not as deep as other RPGs of the era.
The music is ok, really not on par with other RPGs.

I guess both have filler, but damn does Omori have insane amount of filler that annoy you, when you really just want to go to the real world and solve what's happening. Dream space bullshit was obnoxious. There's good parts, but most of dream space is annoying as hell.

As someone who went to the same school as Omori, Earthbound and Undertale played a huge role in why she wanted to make the game to begin with. There's no reason to tear down one game or the other, Earthbound is more of quirky RPG game while Omori is going more for the psychological horror aspect.

This video is essentially my opinion on the game. He goes over the history of the game. I do recommend it because there is a lot of sympathy for Omocat and the first time struggles of making the game while making promises that they didn't know they wouldn't be able to keep up with. Ambitious artist out of their element making a game because they wanted to use a new medium for their art. They did a great job, but there is a lot to fix up in general. If they didn't promise a 40 hour long game and made it shorter (by cutting out most of dreamspace), this game could've easily been a bigger phenomena that it is currently.

I have no problem with the twist, I'm fine with it. And I agree that the story is more about how the characters process their grief, rather than solving HOW Mari died. This isn't some CSI shit. Good story and characters spoiled by terrible pacing and combat design. I have to say the one awesome thing about the game though is you NEVER have to grind. You can fight every single new enemy type ONCE and be fine for boss battles. Boss battles didn't take more than 2 tries to beat with one exception Dumpster battle or whatever in the real world, another optional battle I believe. You do have to grind A BIT for the money artist stuff at the end, but that's purely optional. Overall, Omori is more fun to beat for the story rather than to complete it. Mind you, I never undertook the...Hikikomori route because that sounded like a total slog. Why would I want MORE of the stale combat where you basically use whatever emotional manipulation you need to beat the boss easily.

This is actually something most RPGs around this era suffers from, which is why it's so hard to go back for RPGs in general. Modern days constantly learn from them and improve upon them. Which is why it's probably easy to say Omori is "better," but really it's more like Omori wouldn't be good if Earthbound didn't exist. Neither would Undertale

But put Earthbound on a modern team with the same passion and vision, and I kinda feel most indie games wouldn't be able to compare.

I also feel like most the time people do this, it's because they looked way more into the game they cared about and only know surface stuff about the one they write off. It's why I have a hard time writing stuff off. So many times you either come back or stumble upon something that makes you realize you had a really shallow view of it originally. Why even chance looking like that idiot once you've already done it once or twice lol. Which is unavoidable as you grow as a person. You're not gonna have insight on everything and you're either gonna write off or more maturely just ignore most things from your surface view because you want to get to other stuff that appeals to you immediately more.

Also, there's a post up there that doesn't seem to realize that sometimes the character is deep because of how well they set them up for you to be able to project onto them. Not all characters need to be like Anime characters that spend 30 minutes of every hour telling you exactly what all their intentions are. Which has its place and I enjoy that style lf art too. FF6 is more so that game and that's tied with Earthbound as my favorite SNES games. I can't pick one because they come from completely different styles of art and storytelling. No reason you can't enjoy both equally.

I feel like unfunny people now try to make the objective of "jokes" to make people "upset" cause they're not clever enough to make anyone laugh. I get the opposite out of making people upset that I do making them laugh. But it's definitely easier, I'll give ya that.

Gameplay is pretty much rock paper scissors. You can make your party or keep them while the same thing could apply to the enemies. Being makes your characters hit less damage but it increases their defense. Increases the amount of damage they can do but lowers the hit rate. Overall increases their attack values but tremendously reduces your party members defense or certain attacks start inflicting more self damage.

You can become very oped if you master the games combat system, but at the same time if you don't keep things in check your party members can easily be if an enemy gets the upper hand or if you're not quick enough change an enemies emotions.

Every character including the main character has 4 "skill abilities" with "defend" being the default ability for all the characters. You unlock more skills by leveling up, and you would eventually have to decide what skills you want your party members to use. Some change your party members/enemies emotions to these emotions some characters can be resurrected should they be 'ed, they can can use skills to replenish hp/sp and even buff debuff in accordance to your party members emotions or the enemies emotions.

But by far my part of the emotion system is that your can actually increase certain emotions...
You can make your party members to to to
