Just curious:

Why are german words like...

  • Kindergarten
  • Schadenfreude
  • Zeitgeist
... a part of your language?

When has it started?

And why?
I mean, don't you have an english word with the same meaning as "Schadenfreude"?

Why not "children garden" for "Kindergarten"? :D

As I said, I'm just curious. It's funny for me (I'm from Switzerland).

English has evolved from a few different languages due to whats not the UK being invaded and settled so many times over the last few thousand years.

Germanic languages.
Latin.
Ancient Norse.
And some others Im probably forgetting.

According to Wikipedia, Zeitgeist came through Hegel's writings and was used directly as there's no English equivalent. Kindergarten as a concept was German and was brought to the US by Germans and that's what they called it.
