Such a small step for them to go from that to 'convenience' or 'time saver' options. If you let them, games would be full priced temporary leases with most of to content chopped up into 'all or nothing' packages purchased with microtransaction 'funny bucks' that are only sold in increments which don't match the price of the packages.

It's kind of ridiculous we just gave up on cosmetic stuff and handed it to them tbh. Cosmetic stuff is fun and paying for it takes out all the fun cause now you're just reminded how terrible you are with money everytime you look at what your character is wearing lol

The only games I've ever played where there's any pressing reason to buy microtransactions are mobile games, and I don't even do it there

they are only optional if they are purely cosmetic. As soon as it becomes pay to win (yes, pay to skip the grind is pay to win), the word optional loses all meaning and becomes a dodge as to what it actually is.

it's bizarre that people allowed "it's just cosmetic" to be an excuse
what happened to unlockable, free skins? why should anything from the game be witheld at all, with glaring holes left by their intended absence? games should be feature-complete upon release at no extra charge

Yes. Dota 2 is genuinely free + cosmetics, and has regular drops of some of those for free. No tangible gain from buying.

Purely cosmetic purchasable items are fine. Gacha anything is predatory shit. Actual time savers like "unlock all characters in a fighting game" are fine. "Time savers" that artificially inflate horrendously tedious gameplay in an attempt to bully you into purchasing them are predatory shit.

I have played games where this is actually true so I'd believe it if a game claimed this to be true

Like, enjoy the game the way you want to enjoy it. Who the fuck cares if someone can buy themselves to the end of the game. Unless you view gaming as some sort of important achievement, and them being able to do that cheapens your achievement. But then I think you need to reprioritize you life.

Depends on the game. I've yet to play anything where microtransactions weren't optional.

It depends on the game and style of it. If it's an option to "skip this 30-hour cooldown timer that has no reason to exist," then it's a scam system preying on impatience.

Sometimes you need an ongoing income stream so you can support continued development on a game. Look at something like Deep Rock Galactic. Game is a complete experience and has a billion unlockable cosmetics (that you can't pay to get, must unlock by playing), but you can buy a very small selection of additional cosmetics to support ongoing development like new mission types, new biomes, and new weapons.

With larger studios, having an ongoing income stream from a game means that the team can continue working on content for it. Prior to the DLC era, large sections of development teams would have to work as contractors or be laid off after finishing a game, because they were only needed at later stages of development and couldn't be financially justified to keep on payroll for a year while a studio was between games or early in development.
