Android/Google wasn't even doing it. The OS is open source and a Chinese third party came up with a PR that could be incorporated into OEM phones that did this.

People just twisted the headline way past what was actually happening.

It has baked in ads at some point (not day 1) and the process ended up being so shitty Google banned the practice citing security & battery issues. (Ad rotation forces a home call)

I mean, i've been using android phones since Honeycomb and have never encountered a baked in ad outside of the amazon fire tablets i bought for my grandparents years ago. I've used old samsung phones (note9, infuse, and galaxy s5), and various nexus/pixel phones since then. never got an ad in the OS proper.

Zero problems with any of them, outside of the pixel 5's battery expanding after I left it in a hot car, but they replaced it for me under warranty.

You know you can change the launcher to anything you want right?

Besides the only difference between Samsung and stock in default UI functionality is that stock puts all your apps on a giant scroll list and Samsung paginates them.

Oh and for some dumbass fucking reason Samsung put the back button on the lower right corner.

I count carrier/OEM bloat as ads. Including the carrier engraving on the phone. They were there day 1 of android.

To get stock android from the box, you'll be using a phone with terrible hardware that's also been marred by whatever clown gimmick Google designed into the phone. Something they will completely abandon by the following year. The Pixel 6 doesn't seem to be disfigured, but Google won't be able to resist it for long. Never mind that apps, especially social, won't be polished.

There are models of Android that are basically Stock+ a little extra.

Asus ROG Phone 5, for example, runs stock, however it has an OS modification to permit direct button-screen mapping as well as a game genie overlay, but if you're not playing a video game it's exactly the same as stock. And if you are playing a video game then you probably bought it specifically for those additional non standard features.

So here's the deal with that.

I used to be a big advocate for "you NEED a flagship processor, 4k oled screen with insane contract ratio, a metric shit ton of ram, ect...

Then I went from a Pixel 3xl which had all those things to a Pixel 5 which did not, and you know what? I noticed absolutely no difference or downgrade in the day to day operation aside from better battery life. I don't game on my phone, so midrange processors are absolutely not needed, or even noticed in productivity apps or shit like watching youtube.

The ROG hardware/specs are much better. Except for the giant step down on the camera. Which is a really important hardware component (for me.) Samsung is still the closest you'll find in the US to great all around hardware and it's about as far from stock android as it gets.

I still read that as the Nexus 5. That's great you've been able to downsize and the same is likely true for most. All phones have nailed the essentials. I struggle going back on screens and cameras. I couldn't bare the switch to Apple til they at least had oled. You can never go back and capture life's moments so flagship camera ain't negotiable for me.

I think they were just referring to the fact that Samsung made this the default, which IS stupid. It's easy enough to fix but getting a new phone and having the buttons be switched is annoying AF.

You're right though that people can easily fix most of the issues with Samsung's (admittedly shitty) AI by installing a new AI.

That's the main reason I'll probably never leave Android. You can easily customize the UI and settings so much more than Apple.

No it matters a lot. There are no ads built into the operating system straight up. The only way this happens is if you're using a version of Android that isn't made by Google like Amazon's FireOS.
