Not a shotgun.

Go with a nice pistol. I always suggest a VP9 but MP Shields and new gen Glocks are very solid.

A nice flashlight attachment is recommended as well as training with it as much as you can

Depends on the home. If you live in an apartment or are otherwise very close to neighbors, you will want to take that into consideration before you discharge a firearm inside your residence. It's also a good idea to have a flashlight on or near your firearm because you want to be able to identify what you're looking (and potentially aiming your firearm) at.

Shotgun because it doesn't go through walls and potentially other homes. Plus it's very easy, you literally just point it in the general direction of where you want to shoot and that's it.

Get a short bullpup 9mm rifle, along with a suppressor. Make sure it has 32 rounds or higher magazine loaded with 147gr JHPs. Hang it on your wall right above your head, chambered and ready to go. Get a door brace on your door(s) to buy you the time needed to wake up and grab your rifle. Unload all 32 rounds while screaming at the door to your bedroom if they haven't broken in yet. Maybe one round will hit the intruder. Make sure afterwards that it isn't someone who lives in the house trying to get into the bedroom to go to sleep like a spouse.

A modest pistol.
Mine is so fucking loud, im scared to actually use it because it would deafen anyone else in the house without earplugs.
Including my dogs.
I'm looking into a .25 caliber. Just enough to do something without blasting out my family's eardrums.

Buy up a raven .25

I got 6 of them for 75 bucks each back in 2010 (sold them all for 120 a piece about 5 years later).

I would guess that they are still super cheap and a subcompact you can fit in a sweat pants pocket.

Yeah plus if you ever have to discharge the thing you are re-drywalling whole sections of your house. I'm not sure why people always recommend shotguns for home defense. I mean you could load it with slugs which is less likely to fuck a ton of stuff up and possibly kill a neighbor (if you live in an apartment). Just buy something in the range .32 to .40 in either semi-auto or revolver. A .357 is nice because because you keep can .357 rounds around the house and shoot .38s out of it at the range for much less money.

The important thing is, whatever you buy, fucking train with it. Take it to a range and shoot with it. Get a feel for it. The shittiest gun you are experienced with is likely going to be better than the best gun you've never touched.

Absolutely do not buy a .40!
That's the exact caliber that i have. It has the most kinetic energy of any non magnum round. I bought it because there was a bear around my place, going after trash.
After training with it... It's FUCKING loud. Would kill a bear. And would deafen your entire family.

Do not recommend for use indoors.

IF youre worried about sound indoors, just get a .45 ACP and file your paperwork to get a silencer. They are pretty cheap and easy to get if you dont have a record.

I'd say a high-capacity .22 pistol.
You'll deafen yourself with loud stuff, "killing power" is basically made-up outside of jumping between hand guns/longarms, everything is going to penetrate your dry walls, and more bullets is, frankly, better.

.22 you won't hurt yourself if you have to use it (the noise), lets you have really cheap practice, and is still lethal to people. Relying on hearing protection in intruder situations is poor as you both worsen your ability to detect an intruder and delay any response.

Do you live in an apartment or somewhere with close neighbors? If so you need to take into account bullet penetration. Ultimately you are responsible for every round that fires out of your gun.

Are you comfortable shooting certain types of firearms? Do you require a simple firearm? While ideally a semi-auto firearm is preferred there is nothing wrong with a pump shotgun or a revolver.

And since you are asking this question on CE I highly recommend taking a self defense class and general firearms classes.

The argument I always hear is a shotgun loaded with shot provides more room for error on aiming. You don't want to be needing to rely on aiming perfectly in the dark half asleep if there's a moving target with intent to harm you, possibly with a weapon as well. I'd also say your drywall is the least of your concerns in a moment like that.

A pistol would be fine too as it's easier to handle and you won't obliterate your shoulder if you're in a bad position while firing.

A shotgun at 10 yards loaded with buckshot and full sized barrel is going to have about as much spread as a slug. They dont work like they do in video games.

My father kept a pump action 12 gage on hand. The other guns were kept locked up.

He kept some sort of a revolver that could fire .410 shot gun shells in his office.

His though was something that would fill a door way and sound scary but also didn't have the penetration of a handgun or rifle.

I suppose it varies by your need and home though.

smaller shotgun - maybe a 4-10 - its easier to fire and its still going to kill what your shooting at without over penetrating - practise with it a lot to get the aim down

the other option is a 12guage - custom fill shells with rock salt - wont kill but whoever take it is in for a world of pain
