In this case justified. Yes, the cop could have been better by walking away and not exchanging words but you can't pull a knife out for someone cursing you out and/or giving you the finger. The cop did nothing illegal even if he was a citizen. I'm assuming this was up north where they have strict gun laws and even then you can pull a gun to defend yourself. You're just not able to shoot.

In Florida and some other states he could have shot knife dude dead for that stunt right then and there.

Tbh, if a guy is willing to pull a knife on someone at that level of rage, I don't know if I really want them out and about.

I don't really agree with the cop's tactics, in terms of escalating the situation, but the dude clearly needs to be rehabilitated.

and tbh at that point I never would have pursued him back towards his place, he could have came back with a gun. The off duty should have waited for uniformed officers to arrest him.

They're both in the wrong, but the guy was a dumbass for pulling out a knife over a shouting match. If that was just a dude with a gun, rather than a cop, that would have been kill or be killed.
