Mark my words. Will not happen within that time frame. Been saying it for years. Not until they clear up the insurance issue that nobody can settle. It may very happen in the distant future but its not happening anytime soon.

The roads themselves and infrastructure are not equipped for it. We'll need a nation wide system like in the iRobot movie or the Total Recall remake. Basically every car needs to be "smart", roads need to be completely built around them, communication needs to be complete coverage of every drivable road, there's alot that needs to happen. Self driving vehicles like you see in movies are still science fiction.

Have you seen the state of infrastructure and the funding for it?

That ain't happening.

He's just runaway and marketing Mobile Eye's technology as something that it's not. The fact that he chose to market it as self driving is why mobile eye broke ties with Tesla in the first place.

Number of people driving combustion cars with no "autopilot", length of time a regular can actually be on the road compared to a battery powered car, counting truck drivers and other commercial vehicles, number of Tesla cars even in existence(back to point 1), number of people who can afford a Tesla(back to point 1). All significant factors in "uh statistically" arguments.

If you isolate Tesla's for safety and QC they're not too hot at all. when you have top YouTubers promoting the brand and with multiple of said influencers their suspension and brakes fail it's not a good look.

Statistically, it is safer. Full self driving is not currently anywhere near ready for prime time, but there are multiple warnings about that. It is only rolled out to a small portion of the fleet at this time.

The basic autopilot on highways is really great, though. It's definitely not anywhere near perfect, though, which is why you're repeatedly told to keep your hands on the wheel and pay attention when you use it.

To speak statistically, you have to have statistics/data. Im not aware of Tesla sharing any of their data with the public so thats really pure conjecture.

Yep. Really any time lane lines are significantly obscured, it doesn't let you use autosteer or FSD.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

You're supposed to. The way it works currently, if your hands are off of the wheel, it goes through a progression of warnings. At first it will put an indicator on the display(s) that tell you to apply slight turning pressure to the wheel. Then the display will flash and it have that same indicator. Then it beeps at you with a red indicator. If you ignore that, then autopilot/fsd/autosteer turns off and you can't turn it back on until you put the car in park and back in drive again.

People have found a number of ways to game the system. IMO it needs to be improved quite a bit, but that's how it is right now. They've recently started including cameras in all models instead of just the 3 and Y that also make sure you're looking at the road. Mine doesn't have that, though.

Maybe AI driving should just take over for bad drivers, or in certain conditions.

What's the point of autopilot if you have to keep your hands on the wheel and pay attention? It takes the same effort and attention as just driving yourself.

It doesn't take the same effort. With autopilot, you're basically supervising the work the car is doing instead of manually making all driving decisions yourself. I've found that on long drives with autopilot, I don't get driver's fatigue at all.

FSD is pretty stressful in its current stage, though. It does marginally OK, but it's got quite a ways to go before it's ready to be rolled out to the entire fleet. It's better than it was a year ago, for sure, but... Still not great.
