LGBTQ is seen as a threat to the nuclear family, at least from the secular standpoint. You don't even need to bring religion into it because the premise is that kids and stuff will grow up in unconventional families. It depends on the idea that kids need a mommy and daddy to grow up properly. Some people legitimately believe that if more and more people come out as that category, that the social fabric will decay. Conservatives think if you go too far from how things used to be you are doomed to instability. Pretty much this..I'd argue the average person doesn't care for politics until the Presidential Elections and once that's over it's whatever Watch the news for 30 mins and get on with our day.. We all could have political affiliations but I'd wager most doesn't speak on them or bringing them up in conversation.
