i like japanese RPGs because the boss fights are very well done. Building up to a boss fight is my favorite part of japanese RPGs. In addition, the combat often has significantly more depth. Oblivion, skyrim, witcher 3, etc. all have simplistic combat and general things like movement feel stiff

Western RPGs. For the longest time I wouldve said JRPGs due to FF1-9, until i realized they were japanese games that were very westernized.

Once Oblivion and skyrim were hitting the scenes, it was a no brainer that i preferred western rpgs.

I am starting to get very bored with JRPGs. The stories are drawn out, cliche ridden, and written for asocial people.

When it comes to immersion and exploration, I'd say WRPGs have JRPGs beat.

The aesthetic and stories are a bit different as well. WRPGs often draw from established and mature genres like fantasy or sci-fi, and like to stay in that comfortable space. JRPGs on the other hand do draw from established genres like any work, but they really delve into the surreal and fantastical. I'd say JRPGs are not as dark and gritty as WRPGs. Just depends on what people like

JRPGs are objectively higher quality games but some people just can't stand the art style so they're stuck with western crap.

jrpgs and it isn't even a close contender. I can't stand Bethesdas games outside of Wolfenstein. A nice turn-based rpg or even a game like Eternal Sonata or Star Ocean really keeps my interest.

If being "objective", they are generally cheaper to make, so your argument makes zero sense.

In the last few years I've stopped playing mostly all turn based RPGs. Have moved on now to action RPG with real time combat such as diablo 3 style. I just started to feel like turn based rpg are soooo slow compared to real time action ones.

that's a result of JRPGs being smaller in scope. Audiences can overlook the lack of polish in WRPGs due to the breadth

I personally hate games that aren't polished, but I can understand how audiences overlook it

Yeah, turn based is fine, but I feel like they break up the flow of the games too often. Not having random battles helps, but being interrupted to just basically select "Attack" for most of the battles can get monotonous

This is where most jrpgs falter to me

You have to make EVERY encounter challenging. Wrpgs are great at that

Jrpgs. Western were okay for a time, but they have lost so much originality.

Jrpgs have better writing, stories, character development, mechanics, combat systems ect.

The only good thing to come out of western rpgs were the freedom it gives. And even that got boring.

I agree with your bottom paragraph but jrpgs constantly use anime tropes and saving the world with the power of friendship

WRPG definitely ruled in early to mid 10s but Bethesda, CDPR, and Bioware's newest games and reception have fallen off a cliff while JRPG sales and reception have been experiencing a renaissance. Like what's even the latest well received WRPG? Fallout 4?

not sure but baldur's gate 3 released in 2020 and was fairly well received. might be some newer rpgs but havent really kept track. a lot of games fall under the rpg label now so you can easily look up a list for 2022 but tbh i don't consider most of them to be rpgs lmao.

I like them both for very different reasons. Generally I like wrpgs when I want to get lost in the game world. I like jrpgs when I want to enjoy a cheesy story about saving the world and I'm on the mood for some degree of grinding (even when it isn't even close to needed).

I like Western slightly more, just because they usually have better characters and more "adult" stories. JRPGs, though, I feel like have much better worlds with more imagination and usually more fun to play and visually better characters, whereas I'm really over Tolkien-inspired Western fantasy being every single WRPG game. If JRPGs could ever evolve past being stories for young teenagers, they'd triumph over WRPGs for sure.
