I miss all that weird shit we don't get anymore like Wild Arms and Shadow Hearts (I'm still on the fence about that announced Kickstarter. If the games come out and are actually enjoyable and not a buggy mess, I'll get them). I miss when Tales games felt like bargain bin anime games. They haven't since like Vesperia. I miss other things like Radiata Stories and Rogue Galaxy that we just don't get anymore.

This is not to say that there aren't JRPGs today that are enjoyable. I liked the latest Tales but I had to go into it with a mindset of "expect to be disappointed" that I didn't need for Tales of Destiny Director's Cut. There are still JRPGs out there but they feel too attempted-AAA these days.

IDK where I was going with this thread. Go play some neat shit like Radiata Stories or Wild Arms 5 or hell, go play a silly as fuck spinoff game like Mega Man X Command Mission.

EDIT: can't wait for Tales of Destiny 2's translation to come out, I hope it's fun

But i do miss those days where NIS and IF released 500 different kinds of JRPGs to see what would stick. We got some really cool concepts like Time and Eternity or the Guided Fate games.

Same. There was a lot of really good jrpgs released then. I still haven't played and beat most of my PS2 RPG collection. One game I was pleasantly surprised by was Magna Carta 2 on Xbox 360. It's surprisingly solid.

I bought Tails of Destiny 2 new in store. I still own that fucking thing. I even have the receipt from EB Games folded up in the jewel case.

Yeah same. For many games these days the price is a little misleading as you end up paying extra for content which could have been in the game anyway.

I have all the CEs for the PS3 and 4 titles except Arise. A lot of the side titles too except for some of the PSP games. I think I just have Tales of the World.

I missed out on nearly all of it. And now it's expensive as fuck

The RPG market now is half the reason why I buy new RPGs, even if I don't intend to play them right away. I bought Soul hackers 2 less because I wanted to play it and more because I expect that title will be a little more difficult to come by in the future for less than MSRP.

Nowadays they release games in a broken state.

I miss all the weird and quirky titles the PS2 had, but they unfortunately those games don't make CoD, Fortnite, Minecraft, GTAO money. Sure there are still some titles like that, but they're usually from indie developers or vanity projects from big studios.

it took until the literal most recent tales game for the series to not look like it has a pathetic budget but it's still pretty stiff and has weak cutscene direction

Hell yea posting tales of stuff. I may have misplaced my PS1 games ages ago but I at least bought this tales of eternia years ago. It also happens to be a non volt glitch version. (Seriously, this volt glitch straight up breaks the game. It needed to be recalled and replaced with a updated umd version of the game if you had the physical copy).

But... the games you listed are from 20 years ago, 25 in some cases, way before ps3 era which had no rpgs. Well there was eternal sonata and... folklore probably, but thats it

I got an Xbox 360 because of the three RPGs on it. I also bought a Dreamcast because of the two RPGs on it.

Lost Odyssey has the most absurd class system. IIRC you get a new name for your class every time your stats change, and your stats change all the time, so it's nearly arbitrary.

Half true. But in many ways its actually better because most games get fixed now. Back in the day a busted game was busted forever and all those smaller glitches would stick around too even on more polished games. Many of the truly game breaking glitches are the sort that are difficult for testers to encounter. The kind that only is likely to be noticed when you get hundreds of thousands or millions playing.

Most the publishers who do release geniunely broken games are ones we already know are shit.

Also man I doubt its as stark a difference as you think. We didnt have all the recording and communication tools around to rapidly spread knowledge of such things and the classic consoles have many a buggy rushed out trashy games.

There is an element of increased complexity of games and increased greed to consider but gaming is also more mature as an industry. Dont forget nostalgia. Those treasured games stick in your head but what about that godawful piece of AVGN worthy shit you dropped after dying to broken controls and bugs 100 times on level 1 wasting your whole evening?

It worked because they cut out all the parts they couldn't get working on time, and fuck us if we found the softlock they didn't have time to find. I prefer the update cycle.

You might be thinking of a different game(Golden Sun maybe?) since Lost Odyssey didn't have a class system, you just equipped as many skills as you could on your immortal party members after learning them from the regular party members or accessories.

Yep. Bought them when I was laid up and depressed for 2 years. Grandia 2 is a fine game. Still haven't beaten Skies of Arcadia.

Tales of Eternia was great, to be fair

I don't play a lot of JRPG at all, but Skies of Arcadia is still my all-time favorite. I bought it again on Gamecube when they released it. I don't think I finished Grandia though.
