doing your job isn't enough... if you're not constantly going above and beyond, you're just not that dedicated, which is why the pay is lower. oh... uh... you've been going above and beyond, so you want a raise? b-but... the budget... oh, a promotion then? well, we would give you that position you've been pining for, but we gave it to my stepson who starts next week, so it's already been filled... we do have a few lateral-move positions we can offer though. it's twice as much work for the same pay. interested? oh you're not? guess you just don't have a work ethic, then... smh

I'm happy to count myself as one. Once my 7.5 hours are up I'm done, I don't work extra hours or on my days off. Even before I was salaried and there was the OT potential, I would rather enjoy life.

I knew a guy that went all out one year. Blew past his yearly billing goal by hundreds of hours. Smashed every project he worked on out of the park, made the company more money than anyone else.

The company shrugged their shoulders and gave him the same shitty raise and bonus as everyone else at review time. He was gone within a year.

MY screen began flashing. I had the console rigged to measure quitting time to the nanosecond. Softech had a flexitime system, which meant that you could quit for the week after putting in forty hours. A few quick keypunches and Id logged off for the weekend. They. Lacey was always talking about her higher-ups as if it were her and me against some abstract impersonal them. It was her way of trying to win my sympathy, even though she was a slave driver. A pathetically transparent con job. I wished I could be my own boss again; I was too good for this noise.

Dont worry. I snapped shut my briefcase. The deadlines only Wednesday, you know. Ill bring the thing in under the wire. I always do.

All around me, my coworkers were still tapping away at their terminals. I was the only one with the nerve to take flexitime seriously. Id never move up the Softech corporate ladder this way, but so what? All I needed from them was a steady paycheck. Soon Id find a way to get my engineering firm back on its feet. I gave Lacey a curt nod and headed for the parking lot.

"Quiet Quitting" has been around for a long time. For some reason, people forgot it existed?

I kinda had the opposite problem where I was making it very clear the working conditions were becoming intolerable and several coworkers that thought so too were leaving. They thought giving me a raise would somehow make it tolerable again... I just found somewhere else to work that wasn't so toxic, even if it was slightly lower pay.

We were all working so above and beyond that management took our work ethic for granted and thought dumping more work on us wouldn't be an issue.
