The older these retro systems get the more vital emulation is as an archival method, if nothing else. Hating them is so short-sighted by those types.

Depends on the game really. Snes9x is good for 95-99% of all games.

They gotta justify spending thousands on their shelves full of plastic and cardboard. I mostly prefer playing on real hardware, but use flashcarts and ODEs because fuck paying hundreds of dollars for a plastic case and disc.

Emulation is great and immensely important for the preservation of games. Software emulation has made huge improvements over the last few years. We've even been getting hardware emulation recently with the Mister project. Great time to be playing retro games.

I mean I know there are some hardcore purists that swear by original hardware because there's a 0.02% difference in sound quality when emulating a specific instrument of the console's soundfont but I've never seen anyone just outright dismiss emulation >_>

I never respected gamers as a whole enough to care what they looked down on :3.

They're one the most easily irritated and sensitive groups. It would be a petty minefield to try to avoid them looking down on you.

I understand "purists" when it comes to speedrunning, but for casual playing I don't see any reason why emulated (legal or otherwise) should be looked down upon.

Duckstation is awesome

They should be thanking emulation for keeping retro games alive.

This. I don't emulate games often, but when I do I still use ZSNES or VBA.

I collect old games. I don't care if you emulate junk.

If anything, I wish it drove the costs down for my collecting by reducing demand for carts.

If it wasn't for emulators many games would have never been able to be played again.

you do realize both of them are ancient as shit and have remote code execution vulnerabilities

FOR EXAMPLE: DS = MelonDS, GBA = mGBA, GB(C) = BGB/mGBA, GCN/Wii = Dolphin, N64 = m64p/simple64, NES = Mesen, PS1 = Duckstation, PS2 = PCSX2, PSP = ppsspp, SNES = SNES9X, Wii U = CEMU.

I tried bsnes, I only really liked bsnes-mt and even then 9X will work on a fucking toaster if I have to.

I don't criticise people or look down on emulators, they're the easiest method to access retro content, what's not to like.

But for some weird reason, they aren't a good fit for me. I can still "feel" a difference, though I don't know why or how, and I'm less likely to stay engaged. I've been using everdrives instead, and I love them

that's fair. i know a lot of people that it's just more comfortable playing on console/handheld. I'm that way with 3ds games but not DS games (i hate the fucking scaling on 3ds with ds games)

The main issue with emulation in the speedrunning community is that its impossible to guarantee a consistent experience due to hardware variation and emulation imperfections etc. at least with real hardware, its 100% repeatable. Its not due to any legal issue (there is none) or moral issue (nobody actually cares)

I can play old game roms on my laptop with no input lag at all, but if I try it on my PS4, it's lag city.

The Cowabunga Collection on my PS4 has such bad input lag that the games don't feel good at all to play. Waste of money.

As a PS3 collector and ROM collector I sorta get it. There's just this uplifting feeling looking at your physical collection you don't get from your digital library. Especially when seeing a semi / rare title and knowing it's got everything inside the box like manuals, promotional materials and a mint disc. Probably why there's front end for emulators showing box arts to give you a similar feeling.

I could only really see someone selling the games hatingon it.

A lot of retro gamers tend to be pro game conservation, which relies on emulation more over time. Especially when it comes to licensed games.

A lot of randomizers on emulation as well.

Emilated games dont have that musty old console and cartridge smell.

IIRC there's emulators so accurate they're admissible in speedruns without needing a separate category. SNES9x isn't one of them.

I never use save states. It feels like I'm cheating.

I understand it when it comes to speedrunning, and I can understand preferring an authentic setup (not just real hardware but also eg CRT screen where relevant), but geez, most people just want to play the damn game and don't care if it's not technically 100% accurate on some obscure detail.

Thinking about it, I havent seen any real complaining about cartridge flashcards.

Like most have said, I've never seen the retro community hate on emulators. I've seen them prefer real hardware for various reasons but never put anyone down that used emulators. Not everyone has the space or money to invest in real hardware, a CRT and/or upscalers, and real or flash carts.

Because flashcarts provide an identical experience to using the official game carts. They are also cheaper in the long run for people who just want to play retro games and not collect them. Not all of us in the retro community are collectors.
