Discussion involves a back-and-forth between at least two parties, not one person posting their thoughts on a series while other people either reply with "tag" or "good show".

Would good show be an opinion? That would fit your definition

kirbymuncher posted...
I've been on both ends of that sort of playthrough topic before. the person playing it, and the person reading along with the status updates. and while they can both be interesting in their own way they really pale in comparison to an actual convrsation between multiple people about the series as an ongoing thing, rather than this sort of setup where people who have completed it already can't really say anything other than insubstantial comments on things directly mentioned by the player

I think it just depends on what you like When me and my buddy watch a show where one had more knowledge, we sometimes have more fun than when were both experiencing it for the first time Just depends on how you spin it For some people, it pales. For others, it might be even more fun

not really no you can discuss a show just fine with the binge method

this is only done for greed

now ppl have to stay subscribed multiple months for one show
Releasing over time will keep the discussion alive. It also keeps viewers engaged if they like the show. I burned out on the binge model because after consuming everything immediately, I often had nothing else to be excited for.

sadly many americans have this mindset

"just $10 bro! too much work to click unsub!"

I know because my dad had a ymca and didn't go for several months and I was like "why!?"

With weekly, you can simplify it to "Did you watch the new/this week's X?", and they'll either give you a yes or no. If yes, then you know you're both at the same point. If no, they'll typically follow up by clarifying how far behind they are.

Sure. Ive heard people say no. And say they missed two or three weeks, having no idea. And then, it turns out they missed four, so someone spoiled something for them Sometimes, people dont know how far back they are in something. Especially with weeks in between them When you recently watched a bunch, it can be a little easier to remember which episode was which

HBO is an actual channel. So, they are releasing stuff on tv. It makes sense for them to do it. They are just trying not to let the streaming service fall behind NetFlix isnt a channel. Just a streaming service So thats the difference Apple shouldnt be doing it, either, tbh Also not a channel, AFAIK

I mean sure but it's a negligible amount of money. I mean if you plan on never using it again sure. But if I'm going to watch something every month or so I rather just always have the sub running. I can't be fucked to unsub and resub just to save like a few dollars a year.

It might be negligible to you, but not everyone is in the same financial boat. Not to mention, it adds up. If you dont use it for 6 months, than $60 wasted If you dont use it for a year, thats $120 wasted not everyones in the same boat. For a while, I wasnt making enough for like a year or so. Getting rid of my subscriptions helped me to get by a little easier It wasnt much, but it was enough

Lmao.

You realize what you just said is that people who are AGAINST binge watching argue that it causes spoilers. They say this. Read the thread. I mean the idea is you have to binge it quick or cannot enter discussion because spoilers.

And you then say the irony is that spoilers ARE discussion.

Which means people saying binge kills discussion are... wrong because they are the same who claim they cannot avoid spoilers when content comes out as binge.

You apparently didn't realize what you were saying.

I for instance have argued you cannot avoid spoilers either way so lets see how you try to twist what you just said to being anti-binge.

The people who are pro binge are saying it's easier to avoid spoilers because you can binge it all at once and be immediately caught up. If it's weekly you have to avoid people who saw the new episode before you did every single week instead of just once.

However all that really means people are talking about a show more often throughout the year instead of just after the binge drop. Ergo, serials promote more discussion. It's that simple.

Yep. Everyone I know who watched Stranger Things was done talking about it less than a week after the last two episodes of the season were released. Meanwhile we're still talking about She-Hulk.

It depends, still For example, when they were talking a out Stranger Things, they talked about it all day for the whole week here. But when they were talking about things like The Mandalorian or WandaVision, they only talked about it for max an hour a day. Just every Monday until the show was over. In cases like that, they still talked about stranger things more. Its just WandaVision got talked about over a longer period. But actually got talked about less. So far, She-Hulk is the same. Though, its only like 30 minutes max every Monday. Its not that the discussion itself is longer. Its just spread out So, its not really promoting more discussion. Its just making the discussion take longer

Do people really hate weekly episodes? That's the one thing I missed from cable days it gives shows room to breath and allows discussions.

When all the episodes drop at once everyone talks about the show for a week and it's dead after. This is the reason why so any shows get canceled on Netflix.

As an old fart who grew up without the luxury of binge drops, it warms my heart to see this will get argued to 500.

My personal preference, in general, is weekly drops. I cant even imagine how a show like Breakimg Bad or BCS would have played out as a binge drop vs weekly. The level of suspense and speculation from week-to-week was truly a great part of the experience.

That said, I think the binge drop format is just fine for other stuff. A lot of reality TV, some animation, etc.

So a lot of this can just be a matter if the show itself and personal preference.

Yes, people still talk about old stuff. Literally everything Jojo-related is at least a decade old by now (Jojolion started in 2011). Nobody said people never talk about anything after it's done.

Compare that 11 comment thread to any of the dedicated episode discussions for parts 1-5, though. The drop of new episodes is like a mini event unto itself. It creates a social gathering point and generates excitement. You're almost never going to get the same kind of community energy from random "hey remember this?" posts.

I think this makes it worse, honestly

if it's something they're the producer and sole releaser of, binge setup has everyone gaining access to it and able to binge it and etc at the same time. and anyone talking about it is at least coming from the perspective of everyone having seen the same thing.

but when it's something like an anime they are releasing a transllation for, saving it all up to release as a batch at the end is what spawned the term "netflix jail" in the community, where anyone watching it through any other source has the actual normal experience and anyone waiting on netflix has to dodge spoilers for weeks while everyone gets excited about something they won't see for months
