They're not a monarchy anymore, so the royal families don't even have any real political power. They serve as little more than a symbol. But the problem with such a symbol is that it does nothing but privilege a family for doing nothing useful. Why does England still do this?

People who say the Monarchy don't have any political power are silly. They literally have the power to declare war.

Also, look at how the entire fuckin world stopped due to her death. Not really indicative of someone with "no actual power"

Only because England chooses to recognize her royalty.

Lettuce be cereal...if the monarchy tried to take over like that it would only incite an insurrection and a civil war in the U.K. which is why it doesn't happen.

They pretty much have that power because they promise to not use it.

And do you think they would pay attention to any monarch that decided to do that? As soon as one of them were to try this they would immediately unanimously vote to dissolve the monarchy and sieze all lands of the crown for public use.

Pretty sure having lots of money, status and connections is power enough nowadays.

Not on their own will they can't, no matter the "technicality" of it. Anything they do, they do at the behest of the PM. Vast majority of their power is purely ceremonial and they have no choice in it, even if they did oppose anything being done.

That is when they aren't getting themselves exemptions from laws anyway.

Brexit happened. The Torys have all the actual power. They would not immediately vote to dissolve the Monarchy.

But the thing is they have all that money and power for nothing. At least politicians make laws and serve an actual function as part of the government.

The King or Queen cannot be arrested, they have sovereign immunity (legal doctrine whereby a sovereign or state cannot commit a legal wrong and is immune from civil suit or criminal prosecution). If that isn't power, then I don't know what is.

Super double plot twist is that historically King Charles the first and the second had some bad times. Not a great omen.

That's more like privilege than power.
