People LOVE saying this stuff whenever others are speaking fondly of an old game.

I dont see how its so difficult to accept that people just like something.
That's 'the irony'

At the time it blew my mind, but it's more than nostalgia.

It was my first FPS game to even play. But it wasn't just that, but the details, music, AI, level design, mission structure, weapon selection, immersion, stealth mechanics, multiplayer, movie tie in, variety of level themes, sound effects, destructible objects, dynamic damage to enemies, etc...

Going around an Aztec base shooting enemies with lasers with a militaristic tango theme. Nothing else was like it.

I literally just finished a 100% playthrough this week and I agree with him. The frame rates are garbage, and the aim controls are so bad.

It's fun if you're playing on Agent or Secret Agent. But good luck trying to beat something like Train in 00 Agent with the muscle memory gained from modern FPS controls. It's so bad.

Perfect Dark aiming was more fluid, despite the still mediocre N64 controls.

When did you play it? I played it in the 90s and it was a game changer. Plays like shit today.

Reason people love it is probably nostalgia.

With some updated controls it could still be very fun as a party game

Because it was the first to do that kind of split screen multiplayer. And the campaign is extremely solid

i mean I replayed it in the mid 2010s and I still enjoyed every second of it.

If there's one part of the game that holds up without question, it's the music.

I still listen to the soundtrack on the regular.

The Facility music is my favorite track.

Sorry but that's not on the games hands if muscle memory from modern shooters is keeping someone from beating the game. Framerate is bad, but the auto aim I never had a problem with. Auto aim in combination with the strafing has always been fun to me.

Was my friends during 4 player matches the only ones holding each other at gun point with the golden gun - making them do weird shit to prolong their soon deaths as much as you could?

I'm scared to play it now adays because the game looks rough when speedrunners aren't beasting it.

Perfect Dark had a flawless remaster on 360 and nobody gave a damn about it. Goldeneye is doing nothing and will enjoy far greater success with way more moaning and groaning.

Wait for Agent 64. That's actually something.

Nostalgia at its finest.

The levels felt huge, the gameplay and music was top notch, it even had codes like DK mode which worked in the cutscenes.

Trying to go back to it though is torture and feels like having all your childhood dreams smashed all at once. Though it is hilarious to try and play 4 player and have everyone asking 'wtf am I looking at' and going blind in general from the eye strain.

I didn't play much shooters but Goldeneye was the first shooter I played where enemies react to parts of the body you shoot them at. Shoot them in the leg they grab their leg in pain. Shoot the gun out of their hands and they surrender....up until they pull out a handgun behind your back.
Another N64 shooter, Turok 2 had realistic flamethrower physics and the option to outright blow off limbs with powerful weapons to kill instead of going for headshots.

These features might have been in PC shooters but gaming on personal computers were niche and console gaming was very strong in the late 90s.
