...From the Pleasure Island scenes.

The kids don't smoke at all, and they're drinking root beer instead.

...Way to miss the entire point...

This would be acceptable if they stole the pink elephant acid trip scene from Dumbo and somehow used that instead.

I think it was fine. They still made their point about terrible kids being terrible.

The movie also seemed to make Pinnochio less of a jerk than in the animated film. Whereas the cartoon version would blatantly disobey Jiminy and get himself into trouble, this version actually did listen to Jiminy's advice more often than not. Instead, the film found ways to separate the two so Pinnochio was left without a conscience at all. So the pleasure island scene was more about dealing with peer pressure than it was about Pinnochio just wanting to do whatever he wanted. So the beer and smoking scene wouldn't have fit in this movie because Pinnochio's motivation for going there was different. He didnt actually want to engage in the tomfoolery. He was kinda forced into it.

Nobody really understands the point of what they're watching and I don't know if it starts with companies like Disney or if audiences are just too stupid and the companies give up trying to have it make sense.

When people think of Lion King, they often think of "Hakuna Matata" even though the point of the movie is about Simba fully rejecting that philosophy and going back home to accept his responsibilities as king or whatever. But it's a catchy memorable song! It must be the message of the movie!

To be fair, the part where Rosencrantz and Guildenstern gorge themselves on beetles and tell Hammy to get over his dead dad is the best part of Hamlet.

JRR Tolkien was trashing Disney for this shit before it was cool.

While he was shopping around a Hobbit animated movie:

I recognize [Walt Disney's] talent, but it has always seemed to me hopelessly corrupted. Though in most of the 'pictures' proceeding from his studios there are admirable or charming passages, the effect of all of them to me is disgusting. Some have given me nausea [...]

...

It might be advisable [...] to let the Americans do what seems good to them as long as it was possible [...] to veto anything from or influenced by the Disney studios (for all whose works I have a heartfelt loathing).

He liked the animation ability of Disney but not the interpretations of the Fairy tales he stole. Something like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves isn't even remotely close to the original tale or mythically accurate in any way. That's what his problem was. He died before little mermaid was made but that one would have really sent him over the edge. The original tale is a horrifically depressing story with no moral besides you will literally kill yourself if you try to pursue your desires.

He'd probably be okay with it. Seems respectful to the source material. Even if it's total shit he would still find it preferable to what would happen as a Disney animated movie.

Yeah, I didn't have high hopes for this flick, even with Tom Hanks involved.

There's certain plot points that IMO would have been better off remaining the way they originally were. And Pleasure Island was one of them, commercialized modern censorship be damned. I knew this story arch was going to get the nanny treatment and it's impact felt neutered this time around. The original showcased adult vices of the time that children should steer clear of or face consequences of hard-hitting naivety. This version felt meh...

I think I finally tapped out after seeing a tiny wooden puppet paddling a large piece of a boat at a strong pace like a motor. I know it's based on a fable, but that scene looked ridiculous and lazy. It looked like Looney Tunes, not Disney.

The central character was also the roughest looking on screen for most of the movie. Disney could have done better.

I don't think that's true. I think it's meant to be a happy story given the morals of the time.

It's an allegory for going to heaven but the actual events of the story are fucking awful from start to finish. It's like Cinderella if her sister's foot could fit into the glass slipper and then she chokes on ashes and dies in the end.

With all due respect, is it really creativity if you copy a fairy tale down to its exact details? Walt Disney not sticking to the source material is a good thing imo, and something all book fans, comic or otherwise, need to understand. Just because it's "book-accurate" that doesn't make it good, or at the very least, the only way to be good.

This is in reference to Tolkien's comments more so than this thread. I think Walt didn't just want to make great animation, but good stories too.

that was Disney's initial framework for the movie anyway
they only tweeked it enough from the original plot to call it "new"
its a franchise that periodically crapped out "classic re-releases" for years as obvious cash grabs

this is not much different lol
