I have to assume that someone in that pitch meeting suggested 'Artemisia,' at which point a suit probably shot them down by saying 'psh, kids wouldn't know who Artemisia Gentileschi was anyway' (blissfully unaware that the vast majority of kids would never have heard the names Donatello, Raphael, and arguably even Michelangelo if not for TMNT).

Peter Laird apparently loathes her which makes me feel a bit bad for the character. The show apparently sucked but I don't think there was anything wrong with her specifically. <_<

Though apparently his and Eastman's original idea for a fifth turtle was something magiked to life by a Jack Kirby expy, which is uh...I guess if you had to add a fifth turtle. >___>

Why did Splinter, a Japanese ninja, name the turtles after Italian artists anyway?

Donatello was among the earliest Renaissance sculptors, predating Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael by almost 75 years. He was famous for being one of the first sculptors since Roman antiquity to do proper anatomy / proportions.

Probably one of the more interesting elements of his work was the homoerotic undertones of his masterpiece, the statue of David standing over a beheaded Goliath.

The new female turtle is a hell of a lot more interesting. Been a while since I read IDW's TMNT but IIRC she's a former human Foot ninja that got mutated into a turtle.

She just barely missed the cutoff to qualify for '15th-16th Century Renaissance Artist.'

Bit off top but just in the last week or so a high grade copy of the first issue of TMNT sold for almost $190k. So if you happen to have an original copy yourself, might be time to cash in.

Well...
Her name was Mei Pieh Chi.
She managed to break the arms of a statue in a fight, which got her the nickname Venus de Milo.

That's really shitty. The others were mutated animals but she's a whole ass person turned into a giant shelled freak of nature.

Gotta be honest, she was kinda hot. They're all 18 in that series. And not related -- specifically so that they could engage in flirting with Venus.

It's a shame that she was written to be a Mary Sue. But the more I think about it, the more I'm convinced the series was intentionally sabotaged. I watched an episode by episode review from a guy named Phelous and there's no way the poor decisions could have been accidents. After the pilot, they started piping in random noises like goats and bicycle horns for no reason.

The live action TMNT/Power Rangers crossover was a better representation of the IP.

The real answer is that creators Eastman and Laird thought that authentic Japanese names would be too difficult for western audiences.

I think the first movie said he got them out of a discarded book or something, not sure if that is how it was in other versions. And Splinter was not a japanese ninja, he was a rat. He was always a rat.
