I doubt it. Each country's military-industrial complexes are reliant on globalization. Major powers going to war would result in their own economies and industrial bases shutting down, even if global factions formed. My expectation is more regional conflicts becoming major proxy wars for various blocs to pump funds into. --- Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less. ... Copied to Clipboard!

The first (metaphorical) shots will be fired in cyberspace. (You might say it's happening already.) Clandestine, low-intensity warfare that can cause significant disruption to an enemy with enough containment to prevent things from spiralling into a nuclear exchange. Countries whose only defence is a nuclear deterrent that they're reluctant to use for fear of mutually assured destruction will be at a disadvantage. ... Copied to Clipboard!

coolguyjimmy posted... War World one was called ... "The War to end all Wars"To be honest, it was really only H.G. Wells (author of The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine) who called it that. He wrote a 99-page pamphlet in September 1914 titled "The War That Will End War". https://fantastic-writers-and-the-great-war.com/war-experiences/h-g-wells/ It's highly debatable how many other people genuinely thought it would be the last one in their lifetime. ... Zikten posted... People who voted for never, should know that after ww1, nobody thought ww2 would ever happenUntrue. Plenty of people felt that another major conflict in Europe was was increasingly possible. That's precisely why veterans' associations were so vocal about the need to do whatever it took to avoid it -- and why it was felt important to appease Hitler by trading land (e.g. the Sudetenland) for peace. Anyone who read past the front page of their newspaper between 1918-23 would have been aware that regions of Europe were being torn apart by inter-state and intra-state violence. All the ceasefire of November 1918 meant was that the shooting stopped in western Europe; elsewhere, it continued or was just getting started. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Zikten posted... People who voted for never, should know that after ww1, nobody thought ww2 would ever happenThis is false, as soon as the treaty of versalies was signed the germans were understandably angry about being left to foot the bill and it sowed the seeds of WW 2. RiKuToTheMiGhtY posted... as soon as the treaty of versalies was signed the germans were understandably angry about being left to foot the bill"Understandable" only in the sense that the Germans had conveniently forgotten that they'd already imposed far harsher conditions on France and Russia. Apparently they felt it was absolutely fine for Germany to force France to pay an indemnity of 5 billion francs within five years for the cost of the Franco-Prussian War (which France did) -- but totally unjustifiable for Germany to be presented with a check for the cost of the damage caused by, for example, the German scorched-earth policy in which they systematically destroyed French coalmines and deliberately made the Somme valley region uninhabitable under Operation Alberich.
