The MCU is the most successful, so they try to differentiate themselves by not being the MCU.

The Boys was originally intended to be a parody of comics. The creator I think dislikes marvel and DC

I dont know how the Invincible creator feels, but it's the same man who made The Walking Dead

Harley Quinn stuff is marketed to 30 somethings, particularly the female portion of the fanbase. They like something darker than the stuff they watch with their kids all day.

The Boys and Invincible are both subversions of the genre, that's just what amazon went with.

But it's mostly probably because Deadpool, then Logan, then Joker were each the top grossing R rated movie of all time. That's just what makes money.

Birds Of Prey was likely due to the inclusion of Harley Quinn and R rated superhero movies being lauded left and right at the time. Suicide Squad is literally a comic about terrible criminals being forced to do good or their heads explode.

Heavily depends on what movie it is. The Justice Society movie featured very little gore IIRC. Pretty much the only one that went hard with gore was JL Dark Apokolips War.

Same as Suicide Squad, it's literally adapting the source material.

See Invincible and Suicide Squad.

It's not that these franchises are becoming edgy. It's that adaptations of edgy comics are getting funding while they likely wouldn't have gotten it a decade ago.

That's, like, the point.

Invincible is dozens and dozens of issues summed up as "Meet Mark Grayson. Fuck him and his terrible, insanely brutal life."

I like it more than the old school superhero stuff. I also prefer grey morality stuff in general

Is it edgy or is it just more realistic? Because before when you'd watch a superhero get into a dual with someone and they're both wielding swords you'd have to stretch the imagination extremely far to justify where there's no drop of blood despite them both cutting the shit out of each other. Now you got someone like Wonder Woman, a person that can bench press a building wielding a magical sword that's so sharp it can slice atoms, cutting people's limbs off when she swings it at them. That just makes a whole lot more sense than it would otherwise.

I think it's cool that the MCU keeps it chill while others go hard. It's good to have both options.

Kind of similar with GoT and LotR right now. Both fantasy, but one is obviously brutal as fuck while the other doesn't need that outside bits here and there.

Deadpool was able to show everybody that there's a market for violent adult superhero stuff.
