V's opening is definitely slow. But that buildup is pretty necessary. A 5 remaster or even just a digital release would be great. I feel like not enough people have experienced that game.

Suikoden V needs to give you that Rune that turns off random battles early on.

5 is okay, but it's not as good as 1 and 2 and goes backwards instead of forwards for progressing the suikoden universe that was building up in 1 2 and 3. It's not a bad entry, but you can't do 4 and 5 as prequels back to back imo. You need something going forward, especially since a lot of suikoden has been tying together. Show me old man Viktor and so on and the rune bearers coming together to stop harmonia and third party yuber and Pesmergas battles perhaps destroying everything anyways.

Suikoden V is really really good. Probably the most underrated (and underplayed) JRPG I've played.

I accepted that it was a fitting swan song for the series (what with Konami being dead as a video game company) but another mainline Suikoden game would be a dream come true.

5 going backwards worked so well, it told the much needed story of Georg Prime. Falena was one of the top most wanted destinations by fans, especially after Richmond's reveal about it back in II.

I literally just got 1-5 on my Steam Deck for a replay because I cant find a decent copy of 5 anywhere.

Now I guess I have to wait to see if 3-5 get redone

5 is almost as good as 2 IMO. It doesn't quite reach it, but it comes dang close. The only issue it really has is the very slow opening, but once it gets past that it gets great.

I do agree in terms of what I wanted from a 'next game' it should have pushed the story forward, though. Especially since we never got another one. It really sucks we never got to deal with Harmonia, which was what all of the series seemed like it was building to.

Honestly while 1 is good, I think anyone that rates it higher than 3 and 5 straight up have the nostalgia goggles duct taped to their face.

1 is better than 3, but I don't think 3 is very good. 2>5>1>3, never played 4.

3 is forever going to own my soul. One of my favorite RPGs of all time.

It just nails it for me so much aesthetically.

Also it has the best OP cinematic ever in a video game.

Only people who like 3 more than 1 or 2 is people who played 3 first.

Why do people like 3 so much? I haven't played that much of them yet, but 3 plays like ass.

I played the entire series in order before 3 even came out.

3 is a great game. Yes, it's different than 1 and 2, but its got a great plot, great characters, and the gameplay is really fun once you get over the fact it doesn't play like 1 and 2.

It's fairly chunky today, no doubt. I replayed it...4 years ago and it has problems. When it came out through it was a revolution for me and completely changed how deep into RPGs I went. I can't never help but think incredibly fondly on it.

This is my ranking, except I played 4 and I have no idea if I'd place it above or below 3. Probably below, but it's not a definite below.

Suikoden 3 is my least favorite in the series, but I'm definitely in the minority.

Honestly very surprised to see that Suikoden 3 is the highest reviewed game in the series.

I just don't find 3's story that good, dislike the battle system overall, think the war system could be much better/more interesting, and I really hate that for roughly half the game, you're stuck with a set party in a game with 108 characters.

1 and 2 were kind of hard to find, especially 2. Thus, most people never played it until 3. Those that played 3 first tend to think it's the best one.

What. 1 is literally an amazing game. Music and story are beyond amazing. The places it falls some is in pacing and in gameplay systems, but otherwise, suikoden 1 is amazing. It's story is arguably way better than 2s. Music is better. 2 takes one and makes it smoother and a bit more enjoyable with another great top notch story that is made much better having played 1 first.

Suikoden 1's story is executed well, it has good writing, but its literally the most bog standard straightforward story you could possibly do with its setup. Literally as soon as the intro is over you can 100% call every single story beat as soon as they crop up except maybe one- Gremio dying how he does

And the gameplay is so easy and basic its almost a chore to play from a gameplay standpoint.

Suikoden 1 is 100% carried on it being pretty different from most other RPGs of the times, the atmosphere, soundtrack, and moment to moment writing.

I highly doubt that. Gameplay is easy if you overlevel. Same as suikoden 2. The only thing you could argue is that the game was not as streamlined into the runes and you could not even use them in the game. But suikoden 3 literally is broken with the speed stat so to say 3 is > 1 with that argument is just silly.

I mostly agree with your take on the plot, but I will say that Teo NOT being the general you tackle last is a bit of a curveball

i remembered i rented 3 once as a kid and i remember finding the beginning part so unintuitive that i just didn't get into at all and never tried it again. i did go on to play 4 and 5, now with this news not only do i want to finally play 1/2 but i kind of want to try 3 again too eventually, the concept actually sounds very cool. maybe i'll be able to appreciate it now.

I wish Chris could get her own game.

And I wish picking her for Flame Champion wasn't objectively wrong.

My favorite part of Suikoden 3 is unironically the side story where it apes Suikoden 1/2. I really really enjoyed those segments! Wish the whole game was like that even if it would be less original.

I remember people comparing Suikoden 4 and Wind Waker since they came out in a similar time frame and both prominently featured sailing and it's like oh no what a bad comparison Suiko4 never stood a chance

All that needs to be said about Sui4 is that there is a non significant number of people who have never even seen it before and don't know anything about it other than it has a boat and is also bad.

Like, at least with Shadow Hearts 3 people generally know what that game looks like even if it's in the same situation.

Ive never seen anybody praise 1s story to this degree, though I agree that playing it before 2 is a good move.
