Well obviously, even the big publishers realize this now, hence all of the retro ports/emulated releases

back then we actually had complete games on launch

I like a good mix between retro and modern.

In any given year I usually play at least one game from every Playstation console. Except 5 as I don't own one yet.

disagree.

gaming is the best it has ever been, with both AAAs and indies.

Depends. I like to go back and forth. Played MMX collection 1, then went to Jedi: Fallen Order, about to start on MMZ/ZX collection tonight, then into a Batman Arkham Asylum run, then might do MMX collection 2.

But I also play BG3 in the time between. And Warcraft 3. Might even get into WoW classic with my Fiance. Also going to do BG:DA2 with her.

It's a mix dude, depends on the game and time.

Gaming is making a great comeback with quality gameplay-centric genres like shmups, beat 'em ups, and 2D action games. Even the roguelike/lite trend has been a great addition.

Retro 1st party games were definitely better back then. Patches have been a real detriment when it comes to quality these days, which is funny because it should've been the tool to solve stuff that stayed broken forever.

I mostly play indie crap these days, which despite smaller budgets and teams(some of which are literally one person sometimes) are still more polished than AAA garbage.

Modern indies, as informed by the best of retro titles, are the best. Shovel Knight is a gift from above.

I can almost accept this as an alternate take, and considered saying something to the effect

But I think retro gaming dwarfs indie gaming, and is *less* of a corporate door (IE, Minecraft as an indie)

I think that a lot of modern indies if released in the 16 and 32 bit eras they'd be considered stone classics.

Totally agree with you

But then again, I gotta wonder if some of the stuff we like nowadays actually would have failed back in those days
