El_Marsh 09/18/22 9:14:53 PM #9:	He was a talented enough performer but it's his look that made him stand out. I think the criticism that he gets for ripping off black musicians (note, it's his producers who did this ftr) is both valid and overstated (it had been going on for a century, in one form or another) but as an entity unto himself, he benefited the most from being in the right place at the right time. In a way, I think his talent as a performer is grossly undervalued by younger generations but I also think that he's a bit overrated. He was tremendously important to the promotion of rock and roll as a distinct music format but I think there were several contemporaries who were flatly more talented both as musicians and showmen.
