Does CE like to read books?

https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/celebrities/2022/09/19/kanye-west-private-school-never-read-book/10424468002/

Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, has never been one to mince words or opinion. On Friday, he said reading is not his forte and claims he never reads books.

Speaking on a podcast episode of Alo Yoga's "Alo Mind Full" podcast, which was tabbed "Ye: Music and Fashion Icon," Ye said he's a bigger fan of "good conversation" and talking as a way of learning. He compared learning through reading to one of his least favorite foods.

In response to the podcast's host, Alyson Wilson Ye said: "I actually haven't read any book," Ye said.

"Reading is like eating Brussels sprouts for me. And talking is like getting the Giorgio Baldi corn ravioli," comparing talking to a famous pasta dish that's served at Santa Monica restaurant Giorgi Baldi.

Ye's contempt for reading didn't just stop at books in the podcast interview. He expressed disdain with having to read long text messages, admitting to often only reading the first and last paragraph of those.

I would probably go crazy if I abstained from books. Not only is reading edifying, but it's also relaxing.

What about you dudes?

Unless you really like it for a hobby, I can't really imagine sitting down to read a book these days tbh. With the little free time there is, I'd much rather be hanging with family/friends, watching tv/movies, listening to music, or playing video games.

It's alright. But comes off a lil pretentious when people think they're doing something special by getting their fantasy from books instead of movies and games. Everything is gonna have a certain of level of that with whatever came first tho. Go touch some grass. Which you can now do while watching tv or playing games as well :3. Sit on some grass bucknaked and feel those grass blades tickle your bootyhole while you read a book or kill demons in your favorite game. We all just escaping.

I don't see how anyone can consider themselves a competent lyricist without a deep understanding of poetry. Of course Kanye's lyrics are just as bad as the rest of his music so it makes sense that he doesn't read any books.

You can learn poetry from others performing poetry from what was originally learned from books. It's why the book isn't as necessary anymore. Just because something was first, doesn't mean it's the best version. In fact, it's usually the opposite. Written poetry deserves all the respect for it's place as the original and ability to inspire everything after it. But there's a difference between influence and modern usefulness. Just because if you take consideration of all time periods, it's the biggest influencer. That doesn't mean it's currently the only way to learn or even the best. That's silly. This is just what nostalgia feels like. Thinking because something was the first, it's automatically the best form and always will be. It completely ignores that society constantly advances and builds onto itself

Oral poetry came first. Rhyming schemes were necessary mnemonics to know the lyrics because they were never written.

The Greeks were the first to write their poetry down first IIRC. Legends like Gilgamesh or Beowulf were written down centuries after they were just campfire songs.

Regardless there's a strong correlation between people who read a lot and people who write well.

You look at someone like Rza and he's extremely well read and his lyrical diversity is far above many other rappers. Even something as simple as reading the Qur'an helps.

That's a dumb thing to say especially since Consequence and Rhymefest wrote most of his lyrics early on and they are both great lyricists.

I admitted to a correlation in my first post in this topic....I just realized I backed out of my first post saying it had merit but didn't mean everything.

Anyway, My argument was basically that it does help, but discluding people or saying stuff like "oh, that's why they're bad" just because they don't read classic poetry isn't very forward thinking. In the same way you don't have to read books to understand how to make a story for a movie. You can just learn from other movies that were influenced by books and skip that step now. There's so much material to study now that doesn't involve books.

And obviously, poetry has become more subjective as it morphed and been built upon. So, it all matters on how much you can appreciate something that's a departure from the original source.

Honestly, the more I talk, the more this feels so subjective that I can also find arguments against everything Im saying as I say it lol. It's so hard to pin down types of art. Since it's more of an ocean than a river. Everything made can then sprout into millions of other directions with next to no restrictions. Then, as individuals, we each can only perceive what we personally understand about it. We'll all accept and reject different versions while having no objective way to say what's right and what's wrong.

That only applies if you only read derivative genre fiction, like your typical Lord of the Rings knockoffs, or some trash sci-fi. If you read books that can actually teach you something, whether it be literature or non-fiction, reading is easily the most productive form of leisure,

I am just taking a dig at Kanye. While not reading probably doesn't help, it's not really the only reason I don't like his music.

I also don't believe he's literally never read a book:

He literally went to college to study English. Admittedly he dropped out and then later made The College Dropout but like there's no fucking way this dude hasn't read a book.

Fair enough. Im not a fan of modern Ye. But College Dropout is one my favorite albums. Which, as another poster stated, he actually had help with the lyrics on. He definitely delivered them very well regardless. He doesn't really care about his music as much as he does other endeavors these days. Which has been the case since Yeezus. Not saying you can't still make music that resonates with people with it not your main priority. But if you pay attention to him outside the music, it's really obvious his focus was other places. And that's gonna make it take a hit at the very least.
