I watched a video about it last night:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jWfw-rrZrE

  • They started out with the uncut DVDs in the early 2000's, which were 3-4 episodes a disc and used Funi's oldest dub with the Faulconer soundtrack.
  • Then they released the infamous "Orange Brick" sets, which turned the 4:3 aspect ratio of the series into 16:9 by cropping out 20% of the image, and used an automatic degraining process that completely fucked up the image quality. However, because these were cheap and very easy to find, this ended up being the most popular way of watching DBZ at home.
  • After that, they started bringing over the highly-demanded Dragon Box sets from Japan, which were not without their own issues (the sound and picture quality were slightly off) and were also limited releases that got even more expensive than they already were once they were out of print. These also exclusively used the original soundtrack, not the Faulconer score, so viewed used to the latter were left disappointed.
  • Right after the completion of the Dragon Box sets, Funimation started rereleasing the series again, this time painstakingly remastered for Blu-Ray. The picture quality was excellent, but because they had oversaturated the market with the prior releases, sales were abysmal, and this remastering was cancelled after the second release.
  • After that, they started releasing Dragon Ball Z Kai, which cuts the filler of the original series and presents only the canon material. However, Kai censors a lot of the original violence, and even has some scenes redrawn that don't match the quality of those of the original series.
  • Finally, the 30th anniversary set, which claims to restore the series back to 4:3, but is still cropped to a degree, and is also going through the same degraining and smoothing process that the Orange Brick releases went through, causing everything to look smeared and desaturated.
Neither the original Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball GT have this issue; it's just DBZ that does.

I wonder if they will finally get it right at some point?

There is a definitive version if you don't limit yourself to the official shit.

What anime are you talking about because DBZ and Goku fit neither of those descriptions.
