I'm kinda iffy bout some Japanese weaponry so I'll take your word for it lol

And yeah they were sometimes samurai themselves. That'd help them get into court and higher ups' areas of residence

only skimmed the topic but i thought the folding katana stuff was so that the impurities were more evenly spread out rather than somehow removing impurities? don't remember which show said it but i kinda recall that bit. they wanted the impurities evenly spread so that you wouldn't have a distinct weak point in the sword

So, about the "Katana had inferior steel, so they had to fold it" thing
Is it that the iron located in the area was metallurgically bad, or was it that their smelting technique was bad?

the iron from the island of Japan (naturally occurring) was notoriously bad. So bad that the Japanese sword craftsmen developed amazing smelting and forging techniques.

but it was not enough to compensate that they had shitty steel to begin with

So, if one were to use their amazing smelting but with actually good iron, that'd make like super-steel?

the access to superior iron would make all that folding and layering unnecessary

in original diablo 2 I made a runeword in the strongest form of the halberd weapon (Great Poleaxe) and it was the best runeword in the game at the time. I'm not sure if it was the best option for polearms since the game didn't have it's own built in dps calculation system, but it was indeed the sexiest one lol

I wouldn't mind a Telescoping Spear that you could adjust the length of dynamically.

Here is a nice trivia for us sword people:

in medieval Europe swords were at one point reserved for nobles. But knives werent. So peasants found a loophole and they developed the falchion/bracamarte, which is technically a sword-sized knife.

what is the difference between a sword and a giant knife? I dont know.

The Political Elites were always trying to restrict what weapons us lowly peasants could wield / own.

Even back in the Medieval era, it's asinine and Elitest.

Anyone watch the hilariously stupid weird history video on how armor was useless and you are better off not wearing any? Apparently armor is so heavy that a regular human cant wear it for long and will overheat and die. Helmets and plate body armor are useless cause they can be caved in with a warhammer. And if you wear armor, there are weak points that the enemy can target!

Let's talk about curved swords now.
Great at slashing, okay at chopping, not good at thrusting since the point is out of line with the arm. A cutlass is better at chopping than slashing because it was a specialized saber made for the confines of fighting in ships, where you're not gonna have room to do conventional slashes. Though the main use of sabers and other curved swords were cavalry.

Well also japanese weapons were made to use against Japanese armor or lack of. They would have had adapted if they needed to against full plate, they just didn't really encounter it
Yeah, I think that's what I was trying to ramble at with my circular evolution thing. No good reason to make a sword that can go through a solid plate of steel if no one is wearing it.

Kamen_Rider_Blade posted...
There are situations where Iaijutsu / Batojutsu is faster than traditional sword techniques.
I doubt that personally, but I'll take your word for it. Really the value I see in the draw techniques is more because for most of the samurai class's existence, swords were a last resort weapon, so it makes sense to me you'd develop ways to draw and attack at once if someone got way too close for the bow and arrow or spear.
