They did have a strategy. Kill the Night King. That is the only strategy that was ever going to work. Youre talking about battle formations like that would have mattered when the Night King could have resurrected everyone at any time.

You cant use conventional strategies against nonconventional enemies.

The walkers losing at winterfell, regardless of how was going to be underwhelming. They needed one westeros W for it to matter

No, what they could have done that made sense lore wise is send a small elite kill party out to hunt him (with super assassin Arya). That would have made sense.

What did not make sense, unconventional enemy or not, is:

1. Charge the cavalry headfirst into a charging army of dead people (who turn other dead people into part of their army). Edit: also forgot, the dothraki had normal weapons, which are ineffective against the dead. They had no idea the red lady was going to show up to set fire to them. The dothraki charge, if she didn't show up, would have not only done nothing to harm the enemy, but actively bolstered their numbers. THEY KNEW THIS.
2. Have the trebuchets in front of the castle walls (and on the front lines)
3. Have your entire army in front of the spikes, and not on the walls shooting dragon stone arrows from a safe distance with said wall holding the enemy back
4. Have more rings of spikes, creating kill zones around the perimeter
5. Bran not using his warging powers to scout.
6. Probably used the dragons stupidly too, honestly can't remember that bit.
7. Probably a bunch of other shit they could have done better.

Winterfell was a defensive haven. They could have probably held out for days with the above strat, buying time for super assassin Arya, or Jon, or Dany, or even fucking Samwise Gamgee to kill the night king.

^it would have been pretty epic if Sean Astin showed up, killed the Night King, then fucked off back to the Shire WITHOUT ANY EXPLANATION

This. The people who say it ruined all of game of thrones sound silly to me.

Look I'd love to re watch the show like I do with my other favorites but knowing that everything established seasons 1 to 4 ultimately lead no where turns me off on the whole show.
