The cost of living is high for a reason, its one of the best areas in the country. Places most could only dream they could live, cost be damned.

And they're hours aren't anything special, I work 60-70 on average along with countless others. And get fuck all for luxery perks working for a dirty cement plant, while living in one of the top 10 worst city's in the country.

But I'm supposed to feel bad and join them and you in outrage over this petty crap? Lol, no.

And yes, I'm aware of the tech crash. But no shit? The market is second to none during growth periods but always crashes during recessions. So no shit they're downsizing and cutting back perks. The good times came, they went, and these employees should be grateful it's perks being gutted instead of them.

Some people fully expect their job to be "enjoyable" and that is just not possible for every job so I don't think it has to be a standard at all.

Honestly, it should be tolerable but working on a field you actually love is a disaster waiting to happen.

I used to love building PCs, jumped in to it during COVID to make side cash (and see how mining rigs were made) and now I feel like I'd rather face check a desk than crack open a PC

Nah. Being able to work from anywhere, have a ton of vacation time, make a shitton of money, get stock, a company phone/car, only work 34 hours, etc... that's a bit past "tolerable" and bordering on "luxurious".

At that point it doesn't even become about the work and is more about getting as much as you can from the job. It changes things from being about labour to the job being a position of status and privileges.

It's just hard for me to see how people in that situation can advance the labour struggle at all.

If Google starts a trend of taking perks away and that goes all the way down to proletariat I see why that would be a problem, but it just seems like they are getting rid of luxuries that only some people would have access to. So to say this will affect everyone doesn't really follow, and to that end there is no irony.

Until everyone has the same perks there is no irony really. Those aren't labour perks they are status perks.

You right now are advocating for taking away and making work places worse even though the company made record profits. Regardless of the employer/benefits involved, when they take away in the midst of record profits it sets a terrible precedent.

Not sure where it says they made record profits....most companies this year have earned below expectations.

I agree that him saying things like, "we need to be scrappy" and "pull through" etc is all bullshit. But he's exactly right that the macroeconomic conditions coming in the near future are going to be some of the worst since the financial crisis of 2008. The company has something like 125 billion in cash reserves....which will likely reduce significantly over the next few years. Would you rather keep this cash for true rainy day fund where the company is in serious trouble or would you rather make sure your employees still have their free massage therapists and cooking classes at all costs?

Well thats just wrong. Their latest earnings report was quarter 2 and they were below expectation...and thats with inflation. Their cash reserves are down from last year.

Thats why the story had to put it in quotes, because its not even true.

Pretty much, qeather they made record profits or not now will hardly matter in the coming years while we're suffering stagflation. So The days of mega profits tech were making are over for the time being. And company's like Google are already cutting corners.
