They captured humans from an unknown long forgotten homeworld, and then used us as slaves and spread us across the galaxy For an unknown reason these aliens later all died out, leaving behind thousands of planets of separated pockets of humanity Now we finally can reunite and meet our cousins. They've kept us as an alien 'zoo' so that we have to figure things on our own before they would make contact, only when we are deemed "worthy". It's like how we try to keep people from contacting indigenous tribes on Earth out of respect for their cultures, etc. To keep them from being "tainted" or because they're just not developed enough for modern life. Maybe we don't see anything outside of our solar system...because they enveloped our solar system with an illusionary technology and that's why we haven't seen any alien activity with our telescopes.
