Nope, Lion King hadn't won the bracket since the first contest. It was retired for the next two contests for being an absolute monster (and easily defeated the winners of those in bonus matches), but until now it hadn't won the title since being allowed back in.

I think removing them doesn't really make things any more fun. Because you're really just voting for a "runners up" sort of winner anyway. It would be fun if something like Wolfwalkers did win, but only if it actually won and didn't just win a consolation bracket, imho.

You guys act like TENG getting as far as it did was just a fad, and as someone who didn't really follow the drama of the contest and simply voted, I'm sure there may have been SOME of that involved but the movie has gone through a bit of a renaissance over the past few years. I've seen it referred to as "one of the most underrated Disney movies" on other sites, on social media, and even in person fairly recently, so I'm sure that played a part as well. My guess is that the films that came out in the early 2000s (TENG, Lilo & Stitch, Atlantis, Treasure Planet) are just now being seen for the first time by a lot of people in their 30s, as they had grown out of Disney by the time they came out and are now checking them out on Disney Plus.

Cool result, but honestly The Lion King isn't even close to my favorite animated movie anymore like it was when it won the first BAME. Since then several movies have dethroned it, but not enough people have seen some of them. In short CARTOON SALOON IS A GREAT COMPANY PLEASE WATCH THEIR FILMS

I only voted in like two matches, but this contest had the correct winner! It's my favorite movie of all time.

Would love past champions to be removed.

If nothing else, the bracket was very inspired, and it was thrilling to see new blood climb the ranks and put the fear of god into the contest's usual suspects.

I have a few points in favor of retiring champions. We'd have to remove only three movies from contention: The Lion King, Aladdin, Spirited Away. Granted that there are just these three trading wins across eight years of BAME, it stands to reason that retiring them would make for a more exciting contest. Think of it less as a removal and more like a hall of fame. I mentioned VGMC in the discussion thread because the winners of that contest serve as a looking glass to the past; what was champion-worthy then may not be as much now. For BAME, to have the same movies at the top year in and out implies that the ball isn't in motion, and why participate at all if the results are written in stone?
