Satistically right wing political figures, cult leaders and religious bodies are more likely than any other to be pedophiles.

They also cannot defend right wing policies on merit.

So they have to swivel and project the conversation to saying gays, minorities and leftists are pedohpiles

Pedophiles are universally agreed to be a bad thing, so they're trying to conflate the two.

It's also an extremely old stigma against homosexuals that we're just a bunch of kiddy fiddlers, so it helps act as a nice little dog whistle. Not they're bothering to use dog whistles these days.

The right politians that are having massive gains across the world all are.

Republicans and Tories are openly calling their opponents pedos in poltiical discourse in the Senate and House of Commons.

You can't be mad at citizens for noticing this bullshit and calling it out.

American politics in general seem to be very focused on personal attacks. Its very weird for an outsider looking in.

Locally we'll also have the occasional jab or insult but never seen any party, even the alt right fuckwits, make it their modus operandi.

James O'Brien (who I don't always agree with) made IMO a very astute observation about this the other day when he pointed out how many candidates in the 21st century run based on what they oppose, rather than what they stand for.

So you get "I'm running to stop the woke, liberal agenda and leftist socialist takeover of our history by these communist pedohpile cretins!" as political stances. Which are all rhetoric and don't tell you anything about policy.

And that recently Keir Starmer like him or not came out with an old school agenda of just pointing out shit he wants to do. Windfall tax, Great British Energy, Energy caps, 5% tax cuts for the ultra poor etc."

And the response in the media was about how "boring" he was.

It's true. In the UK, Italty, Canada and America anyway. Most mainstream politicans base their campaigns on hating and opposing things. Not what ideas and policies they stand for beyond rhetoric

It's just an easy nice slander to use. They know they can get people on board, and that people will take the accusations seriously, if they use the pedophile accusation.

It's also become a pop culture thing now that "there are pedophile elites everywhere using their elite priviledge to cover up their crimes". People endorse that one across the aisle, which is why it's such an effective political attack.

I see it kind of as the "guilt by association" effect. Any label that is sufficiently stigmatized leads people to think "the only way to understand somebody 'defending x' is if they are x".

Projection. Far-right extremists, to say the least, don't actually have a problem with pedophiles. In fact, as pedophiles like to take advantage of people less advantaged than themselves for their own personal satisfaction, with no regard for others beyond taking pleasure in the harm they do, so they're basically already part of the far right before they even get involved with politics.

The far right DO have problems with what they view as sexual degeneracy, but that's mostly a class thing. They're okay with powerful people being pedophiles, at least according to convenience, because that is their privilege.

its one of the rights oldest strategies, and it always works: take a universally despised thing and associate it to their enemies in order to make being against them a taboo.

for example, communism is terrible. But communism is an economic and political system. But now taking the covid vaccine is communist. Talking about climate change is communist, etc. it works. How many times have we seen pickup driving chuds call people who drive electric cars commies?
