I am originally from a state (California) where it would be more common for those to know both English and Spanish. It wasn't until I moved out of state that I get asked if I speak it. This, in addition to a ton of resentment toward my father, who was Mexican, pushing me away from the language in my most crucial formative years. I know the syntax to an okay extent and with enough practice can speak it okay but I have a really hard time listening to Spanish. It sounds like the Charlie Brown parents and I just tune it out automatically, so it takes a ton of mental energy to be able to translate it in my brain. It's just with Spanish, too. I've been "shopping around" trying to learn other languages and I do not have this problem with French, Italian, German, Japanese, and Russian, but they're a lot harder for me to grasp in general. There are probably more black French speakers (including black French) than white French speakers.
