Im going to retract my earlier theorizing about a post-credits Wario scene.

My new theory is the inevitable sequel will be a loose Super Mario World adaptation (takes place mostly in Dinosaur Land, Mario meets Yoshi, maybe the Koopalings are introduced too).

wario could be a third movie maybe, but I think Yoshi > Wario in the hierarchy, so thats who you would tease next.

honestly though dont really care much about the Italian accent or lack of it, feel like it would make the movie feel lame and it would get old quick hearing it for two hours. seems like a slight New York accent and thats probably enough. Visually looks pretty good. Seen enough to say this wont be 93 bad

You think they're saving all the pop song dancing sequences for the real trailer or did Miyamoto talk them out of it

I suspect that this movie is going to be a little lighter on the pop culture than Illumination's other stuff just because:

1) This is their first time adapting someone else's extremely popular franchise, a lot of people working on this film are probably Mario fans, I think they'll want to take it at least semi-seriously

2) Nintendo's gonna be looking sternly over their shoulders and you know they have a particular way they want things to look

That's not an exaggeration either, everything else is bad. People can say "who cares it's for kids", but that doesn't really fly when other studios are also making movies for kids but they're still good. Spiderverse is "for kids", all the Pixar movies are "for kids". Illumination movies typically struggle to live up to the Cars 2 bottom of the barrel.

Hilariously we are at the point where I honestly would have trusted Sony's animation studios to do Mario more justice than Illumination.

Saving them, HOWEVER, Jack Black Bowser might save the movie.

Yeah I also think the Nintendo relationship is pretty important because if this goes off very well theyll have access to the other franchises

There's already a Yoshi egg in the poster in the Antiques store.

Koopalings probably will come first but I'm sure there will be some nods to Wario in the movie.

I hate Mario's eyes. Everything else looks good.

Chris Pratt's Mario voice for the Mario movie = Sonic's original look for the Sonic movie

Everything else looks great though. Always had decently high hopes for this with Nintendo's involvement. Man the animation is ridiculously good. And yeah, opening the first ever sneak peek with Jack Black's Bowser was definitely the way to go. Nailed it as expected.

We are so used to Mario being dubbed by Charles Martinet that we will have a hard time accepting anyone else. I don't think his dub is bad, but rather need to get used to.

Honestly this all looked and sounded a lot better than I was expecting.

I think you guys are forgetting that Chris Pratt said he worked so hard on this voice. And then this is how it turned out. The guy just doesn't have the talent for voice acting at all.

I don't think he sounds bad. The voice just doesn't really fit the character, but we grew up with a Mario voice that sounds nothing like that, so that might be coloring our perceptions a bit.

I think it's fair to have colored perceptions for a character as iconic as Mario who has had one voice for like 30 years.

Plus, things can be different and still work. I think Charlie Day's Luigi will be good. In this instance Chris Pratt as Mario just sounded eeeeh.

the biggest issue with Chris Pratt's "Mario" voice is that it sounds almost indistinguishable from Chris Pratt's "Chris Pratt" voice.

for me it's moreso that the other voices are pretty great and then there's just Chris Pratt

Well, I do think the voice doesn't really fit the character, and that's not entirely Pratt's fault. He was miscast for the role.

Oh, there's a reason Mario only speaks in voice clips. An entire game of rich dialogue with that voice would get annoying.

Hire Charles Martinet and have him use his Vigoro voice for maximum confusion.

I feel like thats convincing that it wouldnt work.

I don't really care that it's not like game Mario. But I didn't want "just Chris Pratt's voice" either.

But I've always been that guy who has the Super Mario Bros Super Show voices in his head for determining which is the voice Mario "should" have.

He should've tried to make his voice like Captain Lou Albano's.

this film will be so forgettable and chris pratt voicing mario will be like number 12 in the "things mediocre about this movie"

I think he'd have to lower the pitch and really scale back the exaggerated accent to make it something even remotely possible to take seriously

And I like Lou Albano's Mario, but that feels like an "older" voice than what they want for this.

I think he could do it though. He's a really good voice actor. He could tone it down slightly and hold back on the "woohoos" and have a perfectly passable voice.

An entire movie of Martinet is definitely something I don't want, yeah. I'm not sure what I do want, exactly, but it's not that.

That being said

Part of me thinks that this is trying to capitalize on Sonic the Hedgehog's "marketing" and the brief dialogue Mario got in the trailer was dubbed over entirely for the trailer and Chris Pratt will actually do a voice that isn't just Chris Pratt in the real movie.

I also do think Pratt's in a bit of an unfair position. He did have a very slight New York accent in the tiny bit we heard, and if he just went full on hammy Italian accent, in today's world people would jump all over him and go "Why didn't you just hire an Italian guy?" Why is a fair criticism of the casting, and his casting overall was a poor choice to begin with, but I'm not really sure what all the guy can actually do in this situation.
