This is a weird hill to die on. There's not some specific theme that absolutely makes something YA.

So literally the main difference for YA would be:

"Age-appropriate for readers approximately 14 and up"

"Protagonists are almost always teenagers..."

And Squid Game is neither of those. The main character is a middle aged man with a daughter. And the show itself is not what most parents would consider appropriate for 14 year olds. Lots of violence, cursing, some nudity and sex. Yeah... not for kids.

Got it, cursing and blood makes it very different. Must be all those adults getting their recommendations from TikTok.

And all the main characters are teenagers. There are very few YA fiction that I can think of where the main characters are mostly middle-age people.

It's because they aren't mutually exclusive. If I, say, watched it after having it recommended to me by my Mom on Facebook and then again when I met her for a holiday meal then I would check three of those. The question isn't asking what the thing was that finally got you to watch it but in what ways did you hear about it.

Its fine. Theres a bunch of different death game stories from east Asia that are leagues better than it (Kaiji, Liar Game sans the ending, etc.), but the genre usually doesnt make it to the west, so Squid Game was propped up by its novelty to some extent.

The first episode is the strongest. There are also a few high points in the middle. But it's mostly downhill in the second half and it ends on a bit of a whimper.

It was the opposite for me. Took me a while to get past the first few episodes than I binged the later ones. Definitely prefer the serious depressing tone of the later episodes compared to the silliness from the earlier ones.
