The butterfly effect system is cool, and though the setup is pretty generic by horror standards, I enjoyed the characters a lot more than I thought I would, especially Mike. There were some decent plot twists as well, and the frame tale with the psychologist was always intriguing.

Also, I can't wait to see what Snake has to say about this.

Until Dawn's aspirations of capturing a horror movie feel were definitely fully realized here, the game's self-seriousness belied by its ensemble cast. Everyone from Rami Malek's off-putting Josh to Nichole Sakura's whiny Emily fits perfectly in the slasher space, and the cast in general lends a sense of both real emotion and appropriately made-up cheese. There's quite a ton of red herrings and I feel the game almost drowns itself in twists and turns but it manages to stay afloat through solid writing & direction. If anything, a lot of what drags down the game's story is actually the choice system. Now - the system itself is well-thought out, with the obvious butterfly effect gimmickry, but at least on your first time through playing blind, I feel like you can sometimes make what seems like the correct choice (the part with Matt and Emily dangling precariously from the collapsed watchtower is a perfect example of this) only for it to blow up in your face without much chance to stop it. The game's story seems unfairly torturous in that sense, and the game also doesn't have a great sense of when it's necessary to switch to another character, lacking proper pacing. Sometimes you can play a straight hour as Mike and then switch to another character like Chris which comparatively might only take 5-10 minutes at best. While I understand the need to constantly switch character perspectives, and it's an interesting mechanic, I also feel like some characters are given way more attention and importance in the story over others. Still, the game's main plot line of Josh's revenge mixed with supernatural Wendigo chaos makes up for it greatly. The way Josh's pathos are explored through the wonderfully engrossing psychiatrist scenes and the raw desperation and self-loathing feels genuine and not over-dramatic. Now, I do feel like Josh gets a bit too loopy in later scenes, but just the way everything fit so perfectly together and that there's actually ANOTHER threat out there just kept the tension so high even after the reveal. Ultimately, the game's unique blend of many horror styles and the immersion of being trapped on a mountain of horrors is a lot of fun, and though I have my issues with how choices are executed, it never drags down the game enough to being unenjoyable.

Until Dawn is a bit of a combination of me and not me elements. I'm really not a fan of horror, but I love choice-based games like VNs and such. Going in, I was under the impression that the horror elements were pretty campy and that I'd be laughing a lot, but they weren't, really. What they were was incredibly cliched, though not necessarily in a bad way. The cast members are all fairly standard horror archetypes with one or two twists, which works for the game, but it didn't leave me loving any of them. Emily with her bitch aesthetic might've been the most entertaining, since she had the most over the top lines, but they weren't quite at the level that made her likable. They all worked in their various situations though, and making choices as them was pretty fun. The story overall was reasonably interesting. I was partly aware of one of the twists ahead of time I'd heard Josh was a villain, but that was only part of it, and I wasn't aware of the real twist, which was pretty surprising. The evolution of the plot throughout was very well done.

Also I wish there was an easier way to go back and check the other choices out. The tedious gameplay makes it a bit of a pain.

I was surprised by the high marks until I realized I was thinking of Grim Dawn.

I like a lot of these characters! Sam, Mike and Chris are pretty great all the way through. Josh is pretty fascinating as a case study. Emily starts out awful but gets better as it goes on (assuming you keep her alive long enough). Ashley starts out pretty great but gets pretty bad later. Matt and Jessica are whatever.

7.5, has a lot of really fun stuff in it and delivers an excellent "playable movie" game in a way that at the very least hasn't been matched by any other developer that I've seen. (Still need to try The Dark Pictures and The Quarry) Characters are at minimum good enough in their role but there are some really great standouts like Mike and (IMO) Emily.
