Hills was our place in the late 70s and early 80s.

Actually didn't know that Roses was a spin off.

Thought they were all gone by the mid 90s.

I think the weirdest that's still around somewhat is Rose's.

Last time I went in it was a clusterfuck. Nothing seemed organized or laid out properly. And Walmart is right down the road from it so not sure how it even exists.

Sears was for old people and soccer dads, fuck I'm in there for, I'm 7
Kmart was merely the cave within which nested lil Ceasars

I just knew Sears as a tool, appliance and furniture store.

Not toys, electronics and clothing.

We never had a K Mart close so I've only been to one maybe 2-3 times in my life when out of town.

Sears was in our mall and it was cool walking through looking at stuff and playing on the pool/foosball/air hockey tables when they were out. Not exactly the first stop nor the most hyped one, but still a fun enough place to look around.

Lately I've been thinking about the old, non "super center" Wal Mart we used to have. I remember when they had an aisle of fish tanks full of various pet fish. Always cool to look at.

We had Kmart in our town long before Walmart, so that one. I hated Sears as a kid - we had to drive over an hour to get to the nearest mall, and we'd invariably spend time in the adjacent Sears for clothes or tools; as far as I was concerned, Sears was the place where fun went to die.

Getting that giant Sears catalog every year was good times, even if you knew you weren't getting anything in it.

Legos, slot car tracks, and video games are all in the back! Sears gets my vote because it's where I got Super Mario Bros. 2 when it was new and nowhere else had it.

Kmart. I rarely went to Sears but Kmart was one of the big 3 department stores in my hometown (Target, Shopko and Kmart) and Ill never forget how hard of a shit Kmart took after Walmart moved in.

The Shopkos gone now too but it kept its dignity until the end. Kmart was the same as Target when I was a kid, but after Walmart moved in it became a Super Kmart, which basically meant it was twice as big (but not nice anymore; it looked like a warehouse) but the staff was the same so there was always stuff strewn about the floor and they never updated their selection, so you could find N64s there well into the Gamecubes life and pretty much until they finally shut their doors.

Its funny because when I got my first car (after my hometown Kmart had closed) I have a vivid memory of going to the Kmart in our capital to look for old games I knew would be there and finding that store in the same level of disrepair that my hometown one had been in.

EDIT - Also, since I see people posting Sears ads:

No we didn't have that in East Tennessee.

We also had a Magic Mart.

Didn't know that they lasted until 2018.

I mean they weren't around in my home town back in 1995.

Sears

Sears had a sweets counter in every store. You could buy candy, huge bags of popcorn, caramel corn, fudge, and ice cream. At the same time, there were no fast food chains in Kmart. There was a run down cafeteria counter and seating in the back. The food was lousy.

This 1:00 video from 1992 about Kmarts food court sums up my memories of K-mart:

Hehe, I remember their food court.
Mine was more oldschool. I was a kind so I really don't remember the food.

I do, though have one of the steam pans from my local Woolworths.

Probably K-mart they sold SNES games for 75-80 dollars tho. But I just went there well like Hills, actually Hills is super nostalgic to me, but for Sears they had cool Bubble Hockey tables but I never went to Sears really all that much to spend time there. I definitely spent time in K-Mart. Rather gush about Hills it was dirty and unkempt. I played horrible Virtual Boy games there (even as a kid I thought that thing was trash) but I got free popcorn. Hills gets a nostalgic I remember you and miss you from me.
