Some people used it occasionally, some people liked the way it sounded and started using it themselves, repeat until linguistic trend. We're pretty solidly into the "use it because it sounds cool even though it's the wrong place to use it" phase of that, after which people will get bored of it and it will fade into obscurity and some new words will rise in popularity. --- This is my signature.
