Not really. That headcount is why twitter, unlike facebook, hasn't been used to enable and facilitate a genocide.

Well, Twitter's site design doesn't allow the creation of groups the way Facebook does, so it's both personnel and infrastructure.

Everyone saying RIP Twitter like billionaires play by the same rules as everyone else. Someone will commit some heinous hate crime or harassment or the like and the victim will sue Twitter saying they're responsible for lack of moderation. Musk will appeal it all the way up to the Supreme Court, if necessary, where the heavily conservative supermajority will rule in his/big business's favor. Like they always do.

Twitter will become the wild wild west again, and Big Tech will rejoice because they can make even more money without having to pay people for moderation or be responsible for all the (highly profitable) hate speech and whipping up the alt-right into a frenzy.

Which they would be foolish to do so because if the host becomes liable for the shit conservatives say conservatives will actually be censored more, not less. Without social media, I'd have a much harder time keeping in contact with friends, wouldn't even have met many of the friends I have, and wouldn't even have heard of, let alone been able to talk with so many authors and game creators I've formed friendships with.

Social media has both good and bad aspects.

He's probably saying this so that Twitter pull out of the deal and he can escape the fine he'd get if he pulled out.

What about the Twitter users like Matt Swider, Jake Randall, Wario64, etc., that helped thousands of people buy a new XSX/PS5? I would have had a much harder time buying a PS5 without those guys

Oh I get it, it just seems so dumb for anything older to get a boomer label even when almost no actual "boomers" played, watched, or did that certain thing. Popular stuff from the 60s and 70s, sure, but idk it gets old being the general term for retro stuff these days.

Before I really didn't care. I don't have any strong feelings we eling about Twitter, but this is fucked up. Why would he lay off that many people in the first place? The economy isn't exactly great right now.

Sometimes when people announce massive layoffs, the employees that the company would be planning to keep are the ones who have options and they'll be among the first to leave.

I saw this happen a couple jobs ago. I was working at a managed services / telecom company. They got bought out by GTT Communications. GTT's general strategy at the time was to buy a new company every quarter, cut that company in half, and then lay off some of their own staff. Rinse, repeat. Not to mention their CEO at the time was shady AF.

When GTT acquired us, they laid off a 16-year GTT employee around the same time. I was trying to get out big time. Fortunately, I completed my CCNP Route/Switch cert a few months after the buyout. Within 30 days of that, I had two job offers and I got out of there.

GTT has absolutely cratered since then, which isn't surprising. They were the 4th largest IP backbone provider on the planet. They sold off their entire network and they're now just a managed services company.

Good, I hate Twitter.
