I know there's already a thread up for this game but I don't think I can go in there for fear of spoilers. I have a question about how I'm uh, supposed to play this game.

Some of you may remember that some number of years ago I was lambasted for saying I didn't want to play the 800 x 600 Steam version because the new hotness version was coming out on PS4 and was surely going to be brought to PC in the near future. Well, that never happened! Or I guess if what I'm reading is correct, it kind of did but the 4K/new art version of the game on PC (which you apparently have to patch to be in English in the first place) is missing a ton of content that was added as dlc for Steam and as outright exclusive content for the console versions.

So basically my question is - what's considered to be the best/most complete version of this game? Ideally I want to play on PC, but if the content in the console versions is considered really important and good then I guess the best way to do that would be to play the Switch version on Ryujinx or something, which is kind of dumb but whatever. If I'm generally right about all of this, does the Switch version actually have all the content, or is it one of those situations where there's no real definitive version of the game and everything's missing something?

I just looked at Dreams of the Revenants Edition on Switch and yes, that has everything. Base game House in Fata Morgana, essential prequel A Requiem for Innocence, a present day Reincarnation sequel [currently werking my way through this one!], and some short stories. This is the most complete version of the games, but also more expensive.

You can get HiFM and Requiem on Steam if you prefer to play on PC, it's on sale now. If you're just wanting to play the main story in its entirety, or if you're not sure if you'll like Fata Morgana in the first place, this is the most cost-effective option.

I believe the Reincarnation sequel is a console-exclusive.

Honestly I played the base game, and never felt any desire to play any of the spin off dlc.

So I wouldnt worry about it

i've gone through the main game (20-30 hours?) and the requiem of innocence (8-12?) - latter is mostly tedium and it's largely killed momentum/urgency to go further into expansion content, though i still have some desire

Yes, that's the one that's fully voice-acted with the Japanese audio.

Thanks folks! Guess I'll go with the Switch version, then. I'm very likely not touching any of this stuff until December but I've got a VN itch and I'm lining stuff up for my end of year vacation. Don't imagine I'll be doing a playthrough topic but I'll be sure to post my closing thoughts since I know there are a lot of folks here who totally adore this game.
