It's a prime example of people needing to change their envisioned ending of a story they are telling as it goes on. It'd of been more appropriate from S3-S5, maybe.

It's like the ending was a square shape made for a square hole, but as the series went on that hole gradually became a triangle, but they refused to change it and tried to jam it through anyway.

Cristin Milioti played her. They actually picked a good actress and wrote her decently. Just to *series ending spoilers* have her be dead the whole time.

Horseshit finale that tanked the show's legacy. It was already kind of a product of its time, but when that finale aired, the entire show aged like milk.

The controversy is that - major HIMYM finale spoilers - The Mother that the show had been building up to has maybe 10 minutes of screentime with Ted before dying of cancer, and then Old Ted reveals the reason he's been telling the story: he wants to have another shot with Robin.

The entire last season is about Robin marrying Barney and Ted moving on, so in the course of two episodes, that entire last season and the core premise of the show is nullified for a relationship that happens three times in the show previously, which ends in disaster each time and which the show explicitly paints as two people who are better as friends but totally nuclear for each other romantically. The love of Ted's life and the mother of his children is barely fleshed out before being unceremoniously killed off, and the last shot is Old Ted going after Robin for a fourth time.
